Permian Basin / SE New Mexico • Completions Operations
Job Type
Full-time
Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Restraint Technician supports safe oil and gas completion operations by preparing, installing, inspecting, adjusting, maintaining, and removing restraint systems and related equipment at customer locations throughout the Permian Basin and Southeastern New Mexico. Restraint systems help control unintended movement and reduce line-of-fire exposure if pressurized equipment, piping, hoses, connections, or other components shift or fail.

This is a field-based, hands-on position that works under the direction of a Restraint Supervisor or designated field leader. No prior restraint experience is required; Standard Safety & Supply provides position-specific training. Successful technicians follow instructions carefully, recognize changing conditions, communicate hazards immediately, and perform physically demanding work in active completion environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Preparation and Inspection

  • Select and stage the restraint equipment, hardware, tools, personal protective equipment, and supplies identified by the supervisor or job plan.
  • Inspect restraints, straps, cables, chains, anchors, connectors, fasteners, protective materials, labels, and related components before use and after removal.
  • Check equipment for cuts, abrasion, corrosion, deformation, contamination, missing identification, damaged hardware, excessive wear, or other conditions that could affect safe use.
  • Verify that equipment ratings, sizes, configurations, and attachment components are appropriate for the assigned application before installation.
  • Tag, isolate, and report damaged, questionable, expired, or out-of-service equipment and prevent its use until evaluated by authorized personnel.

Restraint Installation and Removal

  • Install restraint systems at designated points according to company procedures, customer requirements, equipment limitations, and direction from the field leader.
  • Position restraints to help control potential movement while avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, heat sources, moving equipment, traffic paths, and other conditions that could damage the system.
  • Secure anchors, connections, and protective materials; remove slack or apply tension only as instructed; and confirm components are properly seated and arranged before operations begin.
  • Perform visual and hands-on verification of completed installations and obtain supervisor approval before the restrained equipment is placed into service.
  • Safely adjust, reposition, or replace restraints when operating conditions, equipment layout, or customer requirements change.
  • Remove restraint systems only after receiving authorization and confirming that pressure, stored energy, equipment movement, and other hazards have been controlled.

Field Operations and Hazard Control

  • Participate in site orientations, pre-job meetings, job safety analyses, equipment walkdowns, and customer-required safety activities before beginning work.
  • Maintain awareness of pressure hazards, stored energy, line-of-fire exposure, suspended loads, moving equipment, vehicle traffic, pinch points, trip hazards, and changing site conditions.
  • Remain outside restricted areas and red zones unless authorized, trained, and required to enter for the assigned task.
  • Stop work and immediately notify the supervisor when an unsafe condition, damaged restraint, improper installation, unexpected equipment movement, leak, pressure concern, or other serious hazard is identified.
  • Maintain clear access to walkways, emergency routes, controls, and work areas and keep the installation area orderly throughout the assignment.

Equipment Care and Documentation

  • Clean, inspect, organize, and properly store restraint equipment after use to prevent damage, contamination, loss, or premature wear.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, counting, staging, and returning restraint equipment, tools, hardware, and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate equipment issue and return records, inspection checklists, service tickets, daily activity reports, and other required job documentation.
  • Record damaged or missing equipment, unusual wear, installation changes, customer requests, and unresolved concerns and report them before leaving the location.
  • Keep assigned company vehicles, trailers, tools, and work areas clean, organized, secured, and ready for the next assignment.

Safety and Emergency Responsibilities

  • Follow company, customer, and site safety requirements and wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Understand and follow site alarm, evacuation, muster, emergency communication, and incident-reporting procedures.
  • Report injuries, near misses, property damage, environmental concerns, unsafe behavior, and equipment defects promptly and accurately.
  • Remain calm, follow direction, and assist only within the employee's training and assigned role during emergencies.
  • Protect coworkers and customer personnel by maintaining situational awareness and communicating changes or hazards clearly and promptly.

Teamwork and Customer Service

  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, other technicians, completion crews, customer representatives, contractors, drivers, and support personnel.
  • Confirm assignments, repeat back critical instructions when necessary, and ask questions before proceeding when the scope or safe method is unclear.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and provide timely updates regarding installation status, equipment condition, delays, and concerns.
  • Assist with mobilization, demobilization, site setup, housekeeping, and other field tasks necessary to complete the assignment safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in company training, hands-on demonstrations, competency evaluations, safety meetings, and continuous-improvement activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • No prior restraint or oil and gas experience required; the ability to complete company-provided training and demonstrate competency is required.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal instructions, written procedures, equipment labels, diagrams, and job-specific safety requirements.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and the ability to safely use common hand tools and restraint equipment after training.
  • Ability to recognize damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, line-of-fire hazards, and situations requiring immediate escalation.
  • Dependable attendance, punctuality, communication, teamwork, and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record consistent with company requirements.
  • Ability to pass customer site-access requirements and complete company-provided and customer-required training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in oil and gas completions, pressure-control operations, industrial construction, rigging, material handling, equipment installation, or other outdoor field work.
  • Experience using hand tools, inspecting load-control or restraint equipment, working around pressurized systems, or following detailed installation procedures.
  • Commercial driver's license, forklift or telehandler experience, or equipment-handling credentials when relevant to the assigned work.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Learn and consistently apply company restraint procedures, equipment limitations, inspection criteria, and site-specific requirements.
  • Perform repetitive, detail-sensitive installation work without skipping required steps or taking unsafe shortcuts.
  • Prioritize safety over production pressure and communicate stop-work concerns respectfully and confidently.
  • Work effectively under direct supervision and progress toward completing assigned tasks with limited oversight after demonstrating competency.
  • Maintain situational awareness around pressurized equipment, moving machinery, vehicles, simultaneous operations, and changing site conditions.
  • Use sound judgment, protect company and customer property, and follow issues through completion.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

This is a field-based position performed primarily at oil and gas completion sites, company yards, shops, and customer locations throughout the Permian Basin and Southeastern New Mexico.

  • Work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, wind, dust, rain, noise, darkness, and other changing weather and field conditions.
  • Regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, climb stairs or ladders, and work on uneven, muddy, or slippery surfaces.
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, position, and handle equipment and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation; heavier team lifts may be required.
  • Perform repetitive pulling, tensioning, fastening, connecting, and material-handling tasks while maintaining safe body positioning.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and work near pressurized equipment, moving machinery, suspended loads, vehicles, chemicals, hydrocarbons, and areas where toxic or flammable gases may be present.
  • Drive to remote work locations and work variable schedules, extended shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and overnight travel as operations require.
