Description

Position Objective: 

To promote the funding and implementation of modern, animal-free research methods at the National Institutes of Health and other government agencies.


Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Present the sound scientific case for adoption of the principles of PETA scientists’ Research Modernization Deal to government and government-funded scientists and other decision makers

• Draft and obtain the necessary data for letters, factsheets, white papers, reports, government comments, and other types of correspondence 

• Attend and/or present at scientific conferences and communicate with scientists on issues surrounding animal research as well as on non-animal research methods

• Present complex recommendations and represent the organization in dealings with state and federal agencies, public- and private-sector organizations, international forums, multinational companies, media, and advocacy and special-interest groups

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Requirements

• MD or PhD in a related field 

• 5+ years of experience at NIH or government agency preferred

• Proven familiarity with research, medical and scientific terminology

• Experience in public policy or science policy preferred 

• Demonstrated success working with scientists and decision-makers to shape science and health policies

• Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research 

• Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to interact with government agencies and members of the public in a professional manner

• Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments

• Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

• Demonstrated ability to handle many issues simultaneously

• Ability and willingness to travel 

• COVID-19 full vaccination and booster recommended

• Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record

• Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization




  

The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $111,322 annually. The ultimate salary within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
