As the FT Histology Lab Assistant Some of Your Responsibilities are: -
Under close supervision, handles and prepares H&E slides of surgical and biopsy tissue for microscopic analysis utilizing automated systems. Records QA checkpoints of Histology technician work in Orchard LIS with a high level of accuracy. Matches blocks against slides and quality checks case in Orchard according to grossing log and prints slide label. Use bar code tracking system to deliver slides. Performs all duties necessary to assist histology technicians or department staff to ensure continuity of laboratory operations. Coverslips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Responsible for filing and retrieval of tissue blocks or slides. Washes and sterilizes glassware and mixes solutions. Records work in laboratory log sheets with a high level of accuracy. Documents daily QA/QC charts for laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory equipment and working solutions for staining and processing. Needed skills and techniques will be developed during first six months of employment through directed work assignments and in-service training.?
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.
- Checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides and prints labels as appropriate.
- Performs load and unload H&E stainer for routine staining of slides from paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions.
- Use Orchard LIS system to pull case information and run worklists and reports.
- Organizes slides for distribution according to LIS worklists.
- Disposes of bulk waste tissue by decanting off the formalin and putting it in the necessary container.
- Disposes of Formalin/DAB mixed waste and Xylene in the outdoor waste drums.
- Under close supervision puts away lab supplies.
- Responsible for filing, retrieval, and accurate record keeping of paraffin tissue blocks.
- Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.
- Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine H&E staining on automatic stainers and processors.
- Prepares and maintains working solutions of routine special stains.
- Performs washing of glassware and solution containers as needed
- Mixes routine solutions for laboratory use.
- Performs all tasks using the appropriate safety equipment and procedures.
- Identifies problems and brings them to the attention of a more senior staff, Histology Technicians, Manager, or Medical Director.
- Under close supervision maintains laboratory equipment in proper working order, following appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
- Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.
- Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
- Follows all National Patient Safety Goals per Collage of American Pathologists, as well as Laboratory and Celligent policies.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time role, Monday – Friday, Shift: 11pm until 7:30am with half an hour lunch break daily.

- High school diploma or equivalency required
- A.S., B.S. or B.A. in a biological/physical science highly desired
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired
- Computer skills required
