5 Axis CNC Machinist / Programmer
Description

Job Summary

Set up and operate a variety of machine tools, such as 5-axis Lathe, to produce precision parts and instruments out of metal. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.



Primary Job Duties

  • Machine parts to specifications, using machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments, such as micrometers.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto machines.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process. 
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to display placement of cuts.
  • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated or cooled.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
  • Program computers or electronic instruments, such as numerically controlled machine tools.
  • Discuss with supervisor, or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information.
  • Check and ensure that new programs or machinery will function properly, and that output will meet specifications.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools.
  • Design fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
  • Dispose of scrap or waste material in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Separate scrap waste and related materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal.
  • Calculate dimensions or tolerances, using instruments, such as micrometers or vernier calipers.
  • Set up, adjust, or operate basic or specialized machine tools used to perform precision machining operations.
  • Maintain machine and tooling in proper operational condition.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
  • Diagnose machine and tooling malfunctions to determine a need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency or adaptability.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
  • Required to cross-train and assist other departments based on business needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in CNC machining is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a CNC Machinist in a metal fabrication or machining environment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot CNC machines effectively.
  • Proficiency in CAM software or G-code programming.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and machine control.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to safety protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks, such as climbing, stooping and bending often.
  • Physical strength to lift heavy tools and components. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent color-vision and hand dexterity for hand-eye coordination, with the ability to manipulate and assemble large and small components.
  • Use of personal protective equipment such as steel toes shoes, safety glass/goggles as required.
  • Machine/Fabrication shop environment; dust, grease and metal shavings are common.

Salary Description
$25 to $35 per hour
