The Wellness Center Associate at the YMCA of Central Massachusetts provides a safe environment and helps to support individual’s Health and Wellness goals and initiatives while maintaining a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. Serving others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting them and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Builds strong, supportive relationships with members by creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment aligned with the YMCA’s mission and values.
- Delivers high-quality personal training services, including conducting New Member Orientation (NMO) sessions, fitness assessments, and individualized program design based on members’ goals, abilities, and health needs.
- Responsible for completing Principles of Member Health & Wellness and Orientation to Healthy Living within 60 days of employment.
- Actively engages members on the wellness floor through proactive, friendly interactions; provides guidance on proper exercise technique, equipment use, and safe workout practices.
- Coaches and motivates members using behavior-change principles; monitors progress, provides ongoing support, and celebrates achievements to enhance member retention and success.
- Promotes and educates members on YMCA wellness programs, services, and initiatives; assists with scheduling sessions, classes, and program participation.
- Asks and answers questions (e.g., post-enrollment interview) and displays empathy in support of helping members and program participants define and build confidence to achieve their health and wellness goals based on their personal goals, cultural background, healthcare needs, diverse abilities and interests; develops plans to meet their individual needs.
- Maintains a safe and healthy environment by supervising the wellness floor, enforcing policies and procedures, and responding appropriately to emergencies and incidents.
- Ensures cleanliness and organization of the Wellness Center by maintaining equipment, completing cleaning responsibilities, and keeping supplies fully stocked.
- Supports daily operations by managing appointments, waitlists, and member communications, including follow-up calls and session confirmations.
- Assists with group exercise classes, member tours, and cross-departmental support to enhance overall member experience.
- Demonstrates professionalism by adhering to dress code, punctuality standards, and communication expectations; completes required reports and documentation accurately and on time.
- Participates in staff meetings, trainings, and continuing education; maintains all required certifications and stays current with industry trends and YMCA wellness practices.
- Serves as a YMCA ambassador by supporting promotional activities, engaging in community events, and contributing to a positive team environment.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the success of the Wellness Department and overall YMCA operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- At least 18 years of age.
- National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required.
- Bloodborne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention training required Prior to date of hire.
- Ability to (and at least one year of experience) developing positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
- Commitment to inclusion and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Job Type: Part-Time
Schedule: Shifts may vary. All staff are required to do a minimum 3-hour floor shift weekly. Please let us know your availability!
Pay: $15.00/hour Wellness Center Floor and $18.00/hour Personal Training, Access to facilities for all YMCA employees, Employee Assistance Program, and Sick Leave
