Description
General Summary of Duties
Plans, directs, and controls the collection function on overdrawn and delinquent accounts. Develops, implements, and coordinates appropriate quality control measures to protect credit union assets.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintains current knowledge of technology necessary to function in position; continuing education as needed. Networks with other financial institutions to stay abreast of current trends.
- Submits changes in policies and procedures, and assists in administrative matters, which effect the organization as a whole.
- Exhibits leadership to the staff and creates an atmosphere conducive to quality performance and morale. Supports and ensures the efforts of all staff promote and enhance a culture of service excellence.
- Provides leadership, coaching, and support for assigned employees. Evaluates assigned staff on an annual basis. Ensures the employees are meeting their responsibilities. Ensures compliance in accordance with the Union contract.
- Ensures review of delinquent loan collection activity; follows up on returned negotiable instruments; negative share collection activity; charged-off loan collection activity to ensure appropriate efforts are being performed by staff that includes legal action.
- Ensures recommendations are prepared for presentation to the Board of Directors indicating loans to be charged off.
- Prepares, implements, and supervises the budget for the department that is consistent with the overall strategic plan and budget of the credit union.
- Responsible for ensuring loan assets are properly stated through the Allowance for Loan Loss Account.
- Authorizes all expenses relating to collection activity of delinquent loans and overdrawn accounts.
- Acts as liaison with legal counsel that represents the credit union for Loss Prevention activities. Authorizes legal action for all accounts, including repossession auctions, foreclosures, and all proceedings relating to collections, including Small Claims Court. Reviews all billings from attorneys retained for collection work.
- Establishes and maintains good working relationship with outside vendor contacts.
- Ensures all loss prevention procedures are kept current and comply with appropriate regulations and SCU policies. Continually analyzes procedures; adds, deletes, or modifies as necessary within authority.
- Assists auditors/examiners with reviews, follows up on exceptions.
- Maintain familiarity with appropriate computer systems and individual reports produced by these systems. Maintains a close relationship with the VP, Information Technology to ensure proper processing of office activity.
- Keeps VP, Lending & Loss Prevention informed of any challenges within area of responsibility.
- May serve as an Assistant Security Officer; ensures all offices adhere to all applicable security policies and procedures.

- Maintain knowledge of and follow the established process for key control, security, and the secure all codes and procedures related to office security. Open and close office by disarming and arming alarms, as established procedures require.
- Maintain total working knowledge of department. Complete necessary logs.
- Maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of credit union policies/procedures that are necessary for performing job duties, including but not limited to Negotiable Instrument Reference & Guidelines, NACHA, BSA, and OFAC.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: A four-year college degree in Business Management or relevant field, or equivalent training is required.
- Experience: Three to five years of collections experience preferably in a credit union, or similar environment.
- Licenses/Certifications: Must attain all required licenses and/or certifications to perform duties of position.
