Job Summary: The PRN ( on-call/at need) MLS  performs  patient specimen analysis and phlebotomy for diagnostic purposes. Under the supervision of a medical technologist, performs procedures in: hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, molecular diagnostics and blood bank. Enters results into and reviews interfaced results in the computer system and notifies medical technologist and health care provider of panic values. Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work environment and appropriate utilization of lab supplies. Follows laboratory policies and procedures.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and immunology.
  • Performs qualitative urine analysis; color, clarity, specific gravity.
  • Performs type and cross matches in the blood bank with results reviewed by the medical technologist.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of expected lab results for the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Makes medical technologist and/or Lab Director aware of abnormal results, panic values.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Maintains trouble shooting and performs quality.
  • Follows standard precautions at all times.
  • Operates and maintains equipment correctly and safely, including calibration of instruments.
  • Interacts professionally with Laboratory General Supervisor, Section Supervisors, Lab Director and Clinical laboratory personnel.
  • Uses hospital approved disinfectants for cleaning.
  • Responsible for inventory of reagents and supplies in the laboratory, reports needed supplies to the general supervisor.
  • Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting.
  • Demonstrates the values of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Communicates verbally in a clear and concise manner.
  • Submits suggestions to improve the laboratory’s efficiency.
  • Interacts with laboratory personnel in a professional manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Science.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements including all state, federal and CMS regulations.
  • Maintains and ensure patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized time system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Attends staff meetings; reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and quality improvement activities.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.
  • Aspires and lives the Mission, Vision, and Standards of Behavior of the hospital.
