Billingsgate is a seafood market and cafe in the Rockridge Market Hall in Oakland. It is named after the historic Billingsgate Fish Market in London. The restaurant is small and cozy, with a counter-service setup. The market and cafe gives the home consumer access to the highest quality seafood in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere where the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Billingsgate is actively recruiting a Fish Market Team Lead who will lead, direct, and motivate our food and beverage service staff in providing our guests with a delicious and memorable dining experience. The Team Lead will lead by example in preparing and assembling to-go and dine-in options from the raw bar, starters, salads, poke sections of the menu as well as market ready fish, oysters, and shellfish. They will also operate the cash register, restock food and supplies, and maintain the cleanliness of the restaurant.

Responsibilities:
- Consistently provide exceptional hospitality and service both to our guests and team members.
- Anticipate the guest experience and constantly be one step ahead in service and hospitality.
- Be a resource for problem solving, guest relationships, and product quality.
- Organize the team to ensure the best guest experience and maximize speed of service.
- Be responsible for protecting the store assets by following procedures for safety, food handling, security, maintenance, and cash handling.
- Monitor inventory levels and accurately track and communicate levels or potential shortages.
- Communicate essential information in a clear and timely manner, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
- Lead and mentor the food & beverage staff, fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and respect through leading by example.
- Assist store management in training and developing new and existing team members.
- Manage and maintain Point of Sale system and cash register to accurately record orders to ensure proper cash-handling protocols.
- Cleans and maintains all areas of the restaurant to promote a clean image.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Minimum 2 years of leadership experience, managing teams of at least 3 – 5 people in a customer facing environment.
- 2 years of experience in the food industry, particularly in fish cutting or meat cutting.
- Familiarity with various types of fish, meats, and their specific handling requirements.
- Excellent customer service skills with ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Exceptional communication skills with ability to speak English clearly and coherently.
- Committed, trustworthy, and with a strong work ethic.
- Strong knowledge of food safety practices and culinary techniques.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
- A commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety in food production.
- Ability to frequently stand and walk for an eight-hour shift.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
Work Hours and Availability:
Billingsgate hiring a full-time position at our Oakland location. Schedule: 11:30am – 8:00pm; some flexibility is required. Hours will vary based on business needs. Must be available to work on weekends and holidays.
Compensation and Benefits:
The starting pay for this position is $21.00 per hour, plus tips. A performance review for a potential raise will take place after 3 months. Employees receive fresh seafood products and company merchandise at a 25% discount.
