Description

Responsible for ensuring that students with special needs meet the overall achievement of the mission of the Academy. 

Position Specific Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (“IEP”). 
  • Plan behavior management strategies for entire class and for individual students under his/her tutelage. 
  • Assist individual students. 
  • Prepare appropriate documentation and reports.  
  • Implement the assigned program of study. 
  • Foster a classroom climate conducive to learning. 
  • Utilize instructional and classroom management systems that increase student learning and maximize time on task. 
  • Monitor student progress towards achieving instructional objectives and goals. 
  • Communicate effectively within the educational community and with parents on a regular basis. 
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of special education rules and regulations. 
  • Develop daily individualized lesson plans. 
  • Adhere to Teacher Code of Conduct. 
  • Provide highly structured classroom management. 
  • Maintain collaboration between administration and special education department, instructional staff and parents. 
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate case records and documentation. 
  • Meet professional responsibilities. 
  • Maintain and upgrade professional skills. 
  • Promote and maintain positive Academy-staff and pupil-teacher-parent relationships. 
  • Support and implement the discipline philosophy of the Academy, as well as disciplinary procedures designed for individual students. 
  • Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to the Code and administrative and/or Academy policies. 
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students. 
  • Attend and participate in all required in-service training sessions and become familiar with the inclusion philosophy and procedures as outlined in AIMS policy. 
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures. 
  • Supervise, direct and train all Special Education Para-Educators. 
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Principal. 
Requirements
  •  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; master’s degree preferred. 
  • Except as otherwise provided by law, the Academy shall use certificated teachers according to state board rule.  
  • Two years of teaching experience in servicing children and adolescents and an ability to effectively interact and collaborate with professionals, parents and students. 
  • Experience with elementary/middle programs dependent on area of assignment. 
  • Satisfactory criminal background check and unprofessional conduct check as required by School Safety Legislation.
