Description

St. Croix Health is seeking a RN Supervisor for our Surgical Services team.  This position is a full-time (1.0 FTE) exempt position. 

The Surgical Services RN Supervisor manages the day-to-day operation across the Operating Room (OR), Gastrointestinal (GI) Procedures Unit, and Sterile Processing Department (SPD).  This role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality care while promoting a collaborative environment that supports staff development, adherence to standards and continuous improvement.  The Supervisor serves as a clinical resource, educator, and liaison between staff and management.  Provide direct patient care when needed. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Operational Accountability

  • Assist the respective department Manager or Director in the development, implementation, and evaluation of patient care delivery systems.
  • Collaborate with the respective department Manager/Director and other leadership to ensure the necessary resources are in place to execute the work of the department. 
  • Ensure appropriate documentation is occurring in accordance with EMR requirements and relevant compliance and policy obligations.
  • Assist in identification of staff learning needs and development of education and competency plans consistent with unit, service line, and organization priorities. Coordinates implementation of unit-based education and assists in evaluation of outcomes.
  • Establish process to assure equipment function, repair process, and routine maintenance on day-to-day basis. 

2. Staff Management and Development

  • Maintain open, effective communication with the department Manager/Director in regard to development and performance of unit personnel.
  • Plan, direct, and guide work of staff/direct reports. 
  • Manage and monitor department schedules, ensure adequate staffing levels and coverage based on acuity and need.
  • Ensure staff are appropriately trained and competent in the performance of assigned duties; assess competencies of staff on regular basis in accordance with established standards and practices.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff to promote skill development.
  • Assist in hiring initiatives; generate requisitions, coordinate interview team, conduct interviews, select staff to fill open positions, establish training plan, assist with orientation and onboarding activities. 
  • Onboard, orient, and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring and support to staff. Model and teach these skills to others.
  • Conduct annual evaluations and necessary corrective action for assigned staff.
  • Apprise and educate staff in new/changed regulations, policies and procedures, and compliance. 
  • Collaborate with preceptors to coordinate the orientation plan and schedule for each employee, based on a baseline individual learning needs assessment.

3. Performance and Quality Improvement

  • Continuously seek quality improvement and assist with ongoing quality improvement activities of the unit.
  • Facilitate the integration of findings, action plans and follow—up of quality improvement activities into practice. 
  • Support the use of quality and patient satisfaction data to improve care.

4. Clinical Knowledge and Scope

  • Maintain the standards of nursing care and implement the policies and procedures of the hospital and department by assimilation of the nursing process into practice.
  • Adhere to all criteria within the scope of Staff RN job description.
  • Serve as department subject matter expert regarding department policies. 
  • Consistently demonstrate clinical competence in nursing procedures and patient care.

5. EMR clinical application lead 

  • Content expert and application lead for the electronic medical record (EMR) applications relevant to role in collaboration with EMR Project Manager. 
  • Implement, maintain and provide ongoing optimization and support for EMR clinical applications. 
  • Work within cross-functional team and with end users to achieve application integration to meet clinical needs 
Requirements

Education & Licensure: 

  • Associate's degree in nursing, required;
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred
  • Current WI RN license required

Certifications:

  • BLS required upon hire
  • ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of starting role

Experience:

  • 3 years of acute care nursing experience 
  • 1-3 years of leadership experience preferred (Charge nurse, Preceptor, Supervisor role) 
  • Knowledge of patient population served in area of responsibility

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversee respective department staff including scheduling, timecard review, identifying developmental & training needs, navigating performance concerns and other relevant employee relations functions.
