Experienced operators will complete a shortened, paid onboarding process focused on safety, systems, and route familiarity to ensure they are prepared to operate independently and confidently. Core Transit provides the tools, support, and resources needed to succeed in this flexible role. 


HIRING RANGE

  • Start Pay: $30.75/ Hour - $37.48
  • FLSA Status: Non- Exempt
  • Classified Part-Time/Year Round

OCCASIONAL BUS OPERATOR We’re looking for experienced, safety-focused operators who understand that their role is an essential part of a larger transportation system. Our ideal Transit Bus Operator demonstrates a growth mindset, maintains a positive attitude, and prioritizes systems and safety in every aspect of their work.

As a Transit Bus Operator, you will safely operate Core Transit vehicles along prescribed routes, transporting passengers on schedule while complying with all local, state, and federal laws and standards. Superior customer service is central to this role, ensuring every rider feels welcomed, supported, and respected. Due to the on-call and limited training nature of this position, operators must be confident, knowledgeable, and capable of working independently. The role does not include guaranteed or regularly scheduled hours, but does require a minimum level of monthly availability to maintain active employment status.

Work assignments vary based on operational needs and are selected through Core Transit’s established bid and scheduling system.

  KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Safely operate Core Transit vehicles in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including DOT requirements, while practicing defensive driving techniques
  • Perform federally mandated pre-trip and post-trip inspections, promptly reporting maintenance or safety concerns
  • Operate assigned routes, trips, or special services as scheduled or bid
  • Provide professional, courteous, and customer-focused service to all passengers
  • Assist passengers with disabilities, including providing ADA-compliant services and communicating safety instructions as needed
  • Provide route, schedule, fare, and trip-planning information to riders
  • Maintain awareness of traffic, weather, and environmental conditions to ensure safe and efficient operations
  • Communicate professionally with dispatch and operations staff using approved communication systems (radio, VOIP, messaging, CAD)
  • Accurately complete and submit required documentation, including inspection forms, logs, and accident or incident reports
  • Operate transit-related equipment and technology, including fare systems, communication tools, emergency alert systems, and onboard cameras
  • Observe safety and security procedures and report unsafe or hazardous conditions
  • Regularly review employee communication channels for policy and service updates
    Follow all Core Transit policies, procedures, safety standards, and organizational values
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS  

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, or ability to maintain CDL as required by Core Transit
  • Prior transit or commercial driving experience preferred
  • Must meet all DOT physical, drug and alcohol testing, background check, and pre-employment requirements
     

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of safe commercial vehicle operation
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to follow schedules, directions, and operational procedures
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to varying work hours and assignments

 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

  • Must meet all physical requirements outlined in 49 CFR §391.41 and pass a DOT physical
  • Must comply with all federal and company drug and alcohol testing requirements, including 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655 and the Drug-Free Workplace Act
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Core Transit routes and service areas in Eagle County, necessary due to the limited training period and on-call nature of this role

COMPREHENSIVE PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS 

At Core Transit, safety and reliability are our top priorities. To ensure we’re building the best team, all candidates must:

  • Pass a detailed background check to confirm eligibility.
  • Complete a Department of Transportation Drug & Alcohol test successfully.
  • Undergo a CDL Medical Exam to confirm fitness for duty and compliance with federal standards.
  • Provide references to verify qualifications and experience.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS This role requires:

  • Mobility: Sitting for extended periods, standing, walking, and climbing on and off buses.
  • Coordination: Simultaneous use of arms, hands, legs, and feet to safely operate the vehicle.
  • Strength: Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Endurance: Maintaining focus and alertness during long shifts and challenging road conditions.
  • Vision & Hearing: Clear communication and the ability to respond to emergency situations.

Scheduling Expectations:

  • Variable schedule based on operational needs and bid availability
  • No guaranteed hours or fixed schedule
  • Must work a minimum of four (4) shifts per month to maintain active employment status, provided work is available
  • Employees will not be penalized if work is unavailable
  • Each employee is granted two (2) amnesty months per calendar year during which the minimum shift requirement may be missed while work is available
  • Part-Time Occasional Operators may bid on open work under existing procedures prior to work being offered to full-time operators
