Field Safety Specialist

Job Summary

The Field Safety Specialist promotes and maintains a safe, compliant, and accident-free work environment. This role partners closely with Operations, Mechanical, Environmental, Purchasing, and HR to implement safety programs, conduct training, and ensure compliance with OSHA, FRA, DOT, and other regulatory standards—primarily in field and rail operations environments.

  

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain comprehensive safety and health programs
  • Lead daily safety meetings and participate in job safety briefings
  • Conduct field audits, jobsite inspections, and ride-along driver evaluations
  • Investigate safety, environmental, and DOT incidents; prepare reports and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, FRA, DOT, and other regulatory agencies
  • Deliver classroom and field-based safety training; assist with onboarding and curriculum development
  • Audit facilities and active jobsites to identify unsafe behaviors, conditions, and exposure risks
  • Recommend, implement, and monitor corrective and preventative safety measures
  • Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation
  • Provide technical guidance on PPE, respiratory protection, confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous materials
  • Support long-term safety strategies to reduce organizational risk
  • Remain current on regulatory changes and best safety practices

  

Work Environment & Availability

  • On-call 24/7/365, including holidays (excluding approved time off or illness)
  • Field-based role supporting complex train derailment and rail recovery operations
  • Must be comfortable working around heavy equipment, utilities, hazardous materials, and extreme environments (terrain, weather, day/night conditions)
  • Requires extensive knowledge of railcars, locomotives, rerailing operations, PPE use, and track protection procedures
Requirements

Education

  • Associate degree or higher in Safety or related field (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field (preferred)

Certifications (required or ability to obtain)

  • HAZWOPER, CPR/First Aid, Defensive Driving
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Confined Space Operations
  • Ability to obtain eRailSafe credentials (background check required)
  • CSHO, OHST, or other safety credentials (preferred)

Experience

  • 3+ years of safety-related experience
  • 1+ year of field-based safety experience
  • 2+ years conducting classroom and field training
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA Construction & General Industry standards

  

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and people-management abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe
  • Flexible schedule; able to respond to changing work hours
  • Advanced knowledge preferred in:
    • Heavy equipment operations
    • Confined space entry
    • Fall protection
    • Driver safety/DOT regulations
Salary Description
$68,600.00-$85,000.00 Yearly
