Overview

The Catholic Diocese of Memphis is seeking qualified and mission-driven educators to join our K–8 Elementary Substitute Teacher pool. Substitute teachers provide short-term instructional support across our diocesan elementary schools as needed, ensuring continuity of learning in a safe, respectful, and faith-centered environment.

This is an as-needed, non-benefits-eligible position.

Position Summary

Elementary Substitute Teachers are responsible for maintaining an effective classroom environment during a teacher’s absence by implementing lesson plans, supporting student learning, and upholding the values and expectations of Catholic education. Substitutes may serve in Kindergarten through Grade 8 classrooms.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement lesson plans and instructional activities left by the classroom teacher.
• Maintain a structured, respectful, and positive classroom environment aligned with school expectations.
• Support student learning and engagement across a variety of subject areas and grade levels (K–8).
• Uphold Catholic values and model professional, ethical conduct at all times.
• Follow school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
• Communicate relevant classroom information or concerns to school administrators or designated staff at the conclusion of the assignment.

  Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required (Education or related field preferred).
• Teaching license preferred but not required for substitute teaching (must meet diocesan and state substitute requirements).
• Experience working with children in a school or educational setting preferred.
• Practicing Catholic preferred; all candidates must support the mission, values, and teachings of the Catholic Church.
• Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Flexibility, reliability, and professionalism.

Employment Details

• On-call, temporary assignments as needed
• Grade levels: Kindergarten through Grade 8
• Background check and required VIRTUS Safe Environment training
