Description

The Medication Adherence Pharmacy Technician plays a key role in supporting primary care practices by promoting and maintaining medication adherence among patients. This role focuses on assisting the primary care team in ensuring that patients understand their prescribed medications, follow proper dosage regimens, and adhere to treatment plans. Responsibilities include monitoring for potential side effects, addressing patient concerns, and triaging issues as needed. Additionally, the position requires a solid understanding of pharmacy operations to help patients overcome barriers to accessing their medications. Success in this role demands strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a dedication to patient safety.


Requirements

Duties: 

  • Provide clear and concise information to patients about their prescribed medications, including dosage instructions, potential side effects, and the importance of adherence. 
  • Answer patients’ questions regarding medications, ensuring they have a thorough understanding of their treatment plans. 
  • Conduct medication counseling sessions with the patient to address concerns, enhance understanding, and reinforce the importance of adherence. 
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to identify potential barriers to medication adherence and develop strategies to overcome them. 
  • Verify insurance information and assist in obtaining prior authorizations or utilizing patient assistance programs as needed. 
  • Review prescription orders for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that patients receive the correct medications as prescribed by healthcare providers. 
  • Communicate with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and other healthcare professionals as needed to facilitate medication adherence. 
  • Collaborate with the primary care team to relay important information regarding medication changes or therapy adjustments. 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of patient interactions, interventions, and any relevant information related to medication adherence, including documentation of any adverse reactions. 
  • Implement and monitor medication adherence program to track and assess patient compliance with prescribed regimens. 
  • Work closely with the pharmacy team to identify trends and implement interventions to improve adherence rates. 


Required Skills: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Pharmacy technician certification or a minimum of 5 years work experience.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, prescription medications, pharmacy operations and common medical conditions. 
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail. 
  • Familiarity with pharmacy software systems and technology
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and privacy regulations. 
  • Computer skills including data entry functions, the use of Allscripts or other various EHRs, and various software programs. 
  • Self-motivated with the ability to organize and manage competing priorities. 
  • Ability to problem solve and show good judgment. 

Key physical and mental requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to push or pull heavy objects using up to 50 pounds of force
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use fine motor skills to operate office equipment and/or machinery
  • Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing
  • Ability to use logical reasoning for simple and complex problem solving\
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations to support business needs as required
