R&D Engineer
Description

The R&D (Research and Development) Engineer will be responsible for measuring and analyzing gearboxes and main shafts and assisting with the creation of custom tooling to help technicians perform their jobs easier and safer. The R&D Engineer also will assist in the creation and implementation of upgrades to gearboxes and main shafts to improve reliability and safety.


Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1. Create 3D models and drawings of all gearboxes and main shafts.
  2. Operate the Keyence scanner to capture 3D geometry of gearboxes and main shafts.
  3. Collaborate with vendors to ensure products are manufacturable (Design for Manufacturability - DFM).
  4. Research emerging technologies and trends
  5. Collaborate with fabrication teams or use 3D printing and other rapid prototyping methods.
  6. Conduct performance, reliability, and safety tests.
  7. Maintain records of R&D progress and findings.
  8. Work with product managers, manufacturing, QA/QC, and marketing teams.
  9. Optimize existing products or processes for efficiency, cost, or performance.
  10. Define project scopes, timelines, and milestones.
  11. Mentoring junior engineers or interns.
  12. Vendor or university collaboration for joint R&D efforts.
  13. All other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/industrial engineering.
  • 2-5 years of wind industry experience preferred.
  • Exposure to CAD, prototyping, or lab testing during university expected.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing tools or quality systems preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

This position is based out of our Sioux Falls Shop. Travel is limited but a possibility.

Specific requirements include:

  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Work may involve heights, confined spaces, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work sitting at a desk roughly 50% of the time.
  • Ability to climb vertical ladders and work at heights of at least 260 feet.
  • Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment
