About the Role
As an Accountant, you’ll be responsible for advanced financial analysis, banking activities, accounting transactions and operations, and reporting to support the organization’s financial health. This role plays a key part in ensuring accuracy in financial data, optimizing processes, and providing insights for informed decision-making. While this position does not have supervisory duties, it requires a high degree of expertise in accounting principles, financial analysis, and compliance within a nonprofit setting.
Proficiency with QuickBooks Online (or similar accounting software) and Paylocity (or comparable payroll systems) is essential. This role also supports external financial audits and payroll-related reporting.
This is a hands-on role where you'll take ownership of key processes, approach challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset, and contribute as part of a collaborative and supportive team. A typical day might include reviewing banking activity, analyzing and reconciling financial reports, and assisting with payroll and revenue cycles. This is a fully on-site role based in Sacramento, CA. The position requires in-person collaboration with teams across departments and does not offer remote work.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, analyze, and reconcile financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Review daily banking activities.
- Assist with grant accounting, fund tracking, and financial reporting for restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis to support strategic financial planning.
- Conduct financial data analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Partner with internal departments to provide financial insights and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Support the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, audits, and financial policies.
- Respond to frequent ad hoc requests for financial analysis and decision support.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and system enhancements to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Collaborate with external auditors and assist in preparing audit documentation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent experience, or a combination of education and experience).
- Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years in accounting, financial analysis, or a related role, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Experience with accounting software systems required (QuickBooks Online preferred).
- Strong understanding of accounting functions, including but not limited to payroll posting and accounts receivable follow-up.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
- Active CPA license not required.
- Skills:
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software such as QuickBooks online.
