The Science of Personality Institute (SPI) is an independent branch of Hogan’s Data Science division, grounded in Socioanalytic Theory and dedicated to advancing knowledge in personality psychology to solve important organizational and leadership challenges.
Summary/Objective
The Director, Science of Personality Institute provides scientific, strategic, and organizational leadership to create and advance Hogan’s research agenda in personality psychology, creating impact on business strategy, product innovation, and organizational challenges.
This role collaborates internally with research, product development, executive leadership, and externally with academic, business, and research partners. The Director is responsible for generating research, translating scientific findings into market-relevant applications, publishing research and survey findings, overseeing research operations, and strengthening Hogan’s global thought leadership.
The Director works closely with executive leadership and HAS board to align research priorities with corporate objectives, long-term growth strategy to set Hogan’s research agenda. In addition, this position will identify opportunities for pro-bono work and charitable giving that will support HAS’s social responsibility goals.
Essential Functions
Strategic Research & Innovation
- Develop and execute a multi-year research plan, balancing the research to include personality theory, applied research, and product integration.
- Identify emerging trends in personality science, psychometrics, AI, and assessment application.
- Partner closely with HAS Product team to ensure scientific rigor in product development.
- Develop and oversee Hogan Lab, which works on experimental approaches to personality assessment including prototyping and pilot testing.
- Develop intellectual property strategy.
Scientific Research & Knowledge Sharing
- Conduct and publish high-quality research in academic (peer-reviewed) and non-academic outlets.
- Present research at national and international academic and professional conferences.
- Deliver lectures, webinars, and thought leadership presentations on personality science, assessment, and leadership.
- Oversee Hogan Press to publish books on personality and organizational science.
- Coordinate with Marketing to maximize global impact and visibility of published research.
Collaboration & Network Development
- Identify and work with national and international faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and collaborators.
- Establish strategic partnerships with universities, industries, and research networks.
- Represent SPI in industry forums and innovation platforms.
- Develop research projects with distributors, coaches, and clients.
- Identifies and works with pro bono opportunities and builds partnerships with charitable organizations to support HAS social responsibility goals.
Organizational & Financial Leadership
- Recruit, develop, retain, and manage high-performing research and data science talent.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, experimentation, and scientific excellence.
- Develop and manage the SPI’s budgets and the allocation of resources.

Experience and Education Requirements
Required
- Ph.D. in Psychology with specialization in I/O Psychology, Personality Psychology, Quantitative Psychology, or a related field.
- Expertise in advanced statistics, psychometrics, research design, and psychological assessment methodologies.
- 5-7 years of progressive research and/or R&D leadership experience in academic or industry settings.
- Demonstrated success translating research into applied solutions and/or commercial outcomes.
- Experience managing research budgets and cross-functional teams.
- Experience coordinating cross-organizational and cross-functional research.
Preferred
- Demonstrated success in managing grant funding programs.
- Strong publication record in academic and non-academic outlets.
- Experience communicating scientific knowledge to general audiences.
