HR Generalist
Department: Human Resources
Location: Juneau
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade(s): 10/11
Purpose:
The Human Resources Generalist provides professional human resources support across multiple HR programs with an emphasis on employee relations support, benefits administration, recruitment, and HR operations. This position assists employees and supervisors with routine HR questions, policy interpretation, and workplace concerns while promoting a respectful and productive work environment.
Employee relations matters, including investigations and disciplinary processes, are handled collaboratively with the Senior HR Director to ensure consistency and compliance with Tribal policies and employment regulations.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Employee Relations Support
• Serve as an HR contact for employees and supervisors regarding workplace concerns, HR policies, and general employment questions.
• Provide guidance to supervisors on routine employee relations matters and workplace practices.
• Assist supervisors with documentation related to performance concerns, disciplinary actions, and workplace issues.
• Support employee relations reviews by gathering information, organizing documentation, and assisting with preliminary fact-finding.
• Collaborate with the Senior HR Director on all employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary actions, and workplace conflict resolution.
• Employee relations cases and corrective action recommendations must be reviewed with the Senior HR Director prior to final action.
• Maintain accurate and confidential records related to employee relations matters.
• Promote respectful workplace practices and consistent application of personnel policies.
• Benefits Administration
• Assist with administration of employee benefits programs including health, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance, and other benefits.
• Provide employees with information regarding benefits eligibility, enrollment, and plan options.
• Assist with benefits enrollment changes, life events, and terminations.
• Support annual open enrollment processes including employee communication and documentation.
• Maintain accurate benefits records and ensure proper HRIS entries.
• Recruitment & Onboarding
• Assist with recruitment activities including job postings, applicant tracking, interview coordination, and candidate communication.
• Support hiring managers during the recruitment process and ensure compliance with recruitment procedures.
• Assist with onboarding and orientation of new employees.
• Maintain recruitment files and documentation in accordance with record retention policies.
• Policy Administration & Compliance
• Assist with interpretation and application of personnel policies and procedures.
• Ensure HR documentation complies with Tribal policies and applicable employment laws.
• Support HR compliance activities including audits, reporting, and recordkeeping.
• HR Operations & Administrative Support
• Maintain employee personnel files and HR documentation.
• Administer employment-related drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-incident testing in accordance with Tribal policies and applicable regulations.
• Assist with HRIS data entry, updates, and reporting.
• Provide administrative and program support across HR initiatives.
• Participate in HR projects and process improvement initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
• Knowledge of basic human resources principles and practices.
• Knowledge of employee benefits administration processes.
• Skill in interpreting and applying personnel policies and procedures.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive personnel matters.
• Ability to organize work, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with employees and supervisors.
• Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles, with knowledge of Alaska Native cultures preferred.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
• Associate’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
• Two (2) years of experience in human resources, personnel administration, or related administrative work.

• Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
• Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
