Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Drafting Intern to join our Engineering Drafting team. The intern will assist in preparing and revising technical drawings while documenting engineering projects and product updates. These responsibilities will include implementing any engineering changes, updating Bill of Materials (BOMs) and maintaining accurate Product Data Management (PDM) records.
This position is ideal for students with coursework in engineering, drafting, or related technical fields who want to apply their classroom knowledge in a professional environment. Interns will gain practical experience with 2D and 3D CAD software, collaborate with experienced engineers and drafters, and develop a strong foundation in engineering documentation and product development processes.
This internship offers a great opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects, build technical skills, and learn from a collaborative engineering team at our Sunbury, OH location.
Essential Job Functions
- Create product documentation change requests to revise and release bills of materials (BOMs).
- Revise existing drawings, designs, and related documentation to implement approved engineering change requests.
- Support Product Data Management (PDM) data card updates and enrichment to ensure accurate, complete, and well-maintained engineering documentation.
- Interface with cross-functional team members to gather information and clarify documentation and submittal requirements.
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to ensure the accurate and timely completion of drafting and documentation requests.
Essential/Preferred Skills:
- Enrolled as a full-time student in a two-year or four-year college or university program. A major in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design and Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related technical field is strongly preferred.
- Basic knowledge of 2D and 3D mechanical design using CAD software such as SolidWorks or similar design tools.
- Foundational understanding of engineering drawings, drafting standards, and mechanical design concepts through coursework or academic projects.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and willingness to learn in a collaborative engineering environment.
Role Competencies
- CAD & Technical Design: Demonstrates foundational knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD software and basic mechanical design principles, including engineering materials and their properties.
- Engineering Documentation: Familiarity with engineering documentation practices, digital filing systems, workflows, and engineering change/update processes.
- Technical Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and basic engineering documentation.
- GD&T Knowledge: Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Communication: Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing, providing updates on assignments and collaborating with engineers, drafters, and supervisors.
- Initiative & Learning: Demonstrates curiosity, willingness to learn, and openness to taking on new responsibilities and challenges.
- Organization & Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and meet deadlines in a structured work environment.
- Dependability & Accountability: Follows instructions, takes responsibility for assigned tasks, and communicates proactively when support or adjustments are needed.
- Team Collaboration: Works effectively both independently and as part of a team to support engineering and drafting projects.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an office environment and sit for extended periods while using a computer workstation.
- Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multiple monitors for CAD drafting and documentation tasks.
- Ability to view detailed technical drawings and work with precise visual information.
- Occasionally stand, walk, or move between office areas, meeting rooms, or engineering workspaces.
- May occasionally visit manufacturing areas while following all required safety procedures and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members in person, virtually, and via written communication.
- Ability to lift and carry light materials or documents (typically up to 10–15 lbs.) if needed.
