Job Title: Manual Lathe Machinist
Location: San Jose, CA
Reports To: Senior CNC Lathe Programmer
Position Summary
The Manual Lathe Machinist is responsible for operating manual lathes to produce precision metal components according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role requires a strong understanding of machining processes, hand tools, and measuring instruments to ensure high-quality parts and efficient production.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation
- Set up and operate manual lathes to produce parts according to specifications.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for each job.
- Perform threading, turning, facing, drilling, and boring operations as required
- Quality Control
- Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.) to ensure adherence to tolerances.
- Make necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and quality standards.
- Record inspection results and production data accurately.
- Maintenance & Safety
- Perform basic maintenance on lathes and related equipment, including cleaning and lubrication.
- Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
- Collaboration
- Work closely with engineers, programmers, and other machinists to understand job requirements and improve processes.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety issues to the supervisor.
Work Environment
- Manufacturing shop floor with exposure to noise, metal chips, oils, and moving machinery.
- Requires standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- May require occasional overtime or weekend work to meet production deadlines.

Requirements
QualificationsRequired:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3+ years of experience operating manual lathes in a machine shop environment.
- Proficient in reading blueprints and applying GD&T principles.
- Skilled in using precision measuring tools.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
Preferred:
- Experience with manual milling machines and other machine shop equipment.
- Background in aerospace, automotive, or precision manufacturing.
- Knowledge of safety and quality standards such as ISO 9001 / AS9100.
