Purpose

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is responsible for the overall strategy, governance, and execution of information technology to support the organization’s business objectives. The CIO ensures that technology investments drive operational efficiency, data security, scalability, AI readiness, and long-term business value while aligning IT capabilities with enterprise strategy.

Responsibilities

Enterprise Technology & Digital Strategy

  • Define and execute an enterprise IT strategy that integrates infrastructure, applications, and data capabilities. 
  • Align technology, data, and application investments with business strategy and operational priorities. 
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on technology enablement, digital capabilities, and data driven decision making. 
  • Establish multi-year roadmaps for systems modernization, application lifecycle management, and data platforms. 
  • Provide executive leadership for organizational AI readiness, ensuring the responsible, secure, and strategic adoption of artificial intelligence capabilities aligned with enterprise goals. 

Application Development & Systems Enablement

  • Oversee enterprise application development, including custom built, low code/no code, and integrated third party solutions. 
  • Ensure applications support business processes, scalability, usability, and long-term maintainability. 
  • Establish application standards, development governance, and lifecycle management practices. 
  • Partner with business leaders to prioritize application enhancements and automation opportunities. 
  • Ensure effective integration between internally developed applications and enterprise systems (ERP, HRIS, CRM, etc.). 

Data, Analytics & Information Management

  • Lead the organization’s data strategy, including data architecture, governance, quality, and accessibility. 
  • Oversee enterprise data platforms, reporting, analytics, and business intelligence capabilities. 
  • Enable self-service analytics and data driven insights for leaders and teams. 
  • Establish data governance, ownership, and stewardship models to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance. 
  • Partner with business leaders to mature data literacy and responsible use of AI-driven insights across the organization. 

IT Operations & Service Delivery

  • Oversee enterprise infrastructure, networks, cloud platforms, and end user technology. 
  • Ensure reliable, secure, cost-effective, and service-oriented IT operations and service delivery. 
  • Establish and monitor service levels, performance metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives. 
  • Lead IT incident, problem, and change management processes. 

Information Security, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure cybersecurity, data privacy, and regulatory compliance across systems, applications, and data assets. 
  • Establish IT governance, controls, and risk management frameworks. 
  • Oversee disaster recovery and business continuity planning. 
  • Partner with Corporate Compliance on audits and regulatory requirements. 
  • Establish guardrails for the responsible use of AI, including data privacy, security, regulatory compliance, and ethical considerations. 
  • Ensure AI-enabled solutions align with enterprise risk management, cybersecurity, and business continuity standards. 

Financial & Vendor Management

  • Own the IT budget, forecasting, and cost-optimization initiatives. 
  • Evaluate and manage vendor relationships, contracts and technology partners. 
  • Ensure strong ROI and value realization from technology investments. 

Manage a Team

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team to deliver high performance and support individual growth. 
  • Set clear goals and expectations, monitor progress, and provide regular feedback. 
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture. 
  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensure alignment with department objectives, and remove barriers to performance. 
  • Support resource planning, workload distribution, and prioritization of tasks. 
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, one-on-one check-ins, and performance conversations. 
  • Identify and address performance issues in a timely and constructive manner. 
  • Partner with Human Resources on talent-related matters such as hiring, onboarding, development, employee relations, and performance management.  
  • Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the team. 
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards. 
  • Build organizational capability by developing team skills related to AI awareness, data fluency, automation, and emerging technologies as appropriate to role. 
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of enterprise applications, systems integration, and application development governance. 
  • Expertise in data platforms, analytics, and information management. 
  • Expertise with cybersecurity, compliance, and IT governance frameworks. 
  • Financial acumen and executive-level communication skills. 
  • Ability to translate business needs into scalable technology and data solutions.  
  • Proven ability to embed a customer focused service culture within IT, balancing operational rigor with responsiveness and user experience. 
  • Ability to lead responsible AI adoption, balancing innovation with governance, security, regulatory, and ethical considerations. 
  • Strong understanding of the data foundations required to enable AI, including data quality, governance, and stewardship. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively across multiple channels and asynchronously in a remote-first working environment. 


Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, or related field, Master’s preferred. 
  • 10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience with enterprise systems, application development, and data solutions. 
  • Demonstrated experience within the P&C insurance industry, preferred.  
  • Demonstrated success leading technology modernization, application portfolios, and data initiatives. 
  • Travel is required for annual all-company gathering, executive leadership meetings, or team design sessions (up to 20% of the time).

Starting at $245k/yr + annual bonus
