Description

The Student Welder (Trainee) is responsible for learning and applying fundamental welding skills through hands-on training and on-the-job experience. This role follows a structured development plan focused on safety, equipment operation, welding techniques, and quality standards. The trainee will work under supervision to develop the ability to perform welding tasks independently.

**The Student Welder must be a current high school student or post grad senior who has less than 6 months post-graduation. Students must be able to complete a minimum of 120 hours of work and begin work no later than June 12, 2026. All students must be able to have their internship completed no later than September 30, 2026.** 


Requirements

  

Welding & Fabrication Skills

  • Assist with and gradually perform welding tasks on: 
    • Fabrications       
    • Weldments 
    • Machine parts 
    • Tools using ferrous and non-ferrous materials 
  • Plan and execute appropriate welding processes based on job requirements 

Demonstrated Skill Competencies

The trainee will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Select proper MIG welding wire, tips, and shielding gas 
  • Set and adjust current, voltage, and gas pressure based on material and job      requirements 
  • Operate a MIG torch too: 
    • Produce smooth, even weld beads 
    • Achieve proper penetration and fusion 
    • Prevent burn-through and distortion 
  • Visually inspect welds and clean finished work 
  • Operate shop equipment, including: 
    • Angle grinders for surface preparation 
    • Welding machines 
    • Forklifts 
    • Overhead cranes 
  • Inspect and test welded surfaces and structures for quality and accuracy
  • Complete new hire safety training and follow all workplace safety procedures
