Summary/Objective
The Intern position with the City of Manhattan offers an advanced and unique learning and leadership experience in municipal government. The Park Planner Intern works closely with the Park Planner I/II in the planning, design, and management of capital improvement projects for the parks, recreation, and zoo divisions. The goal of the position is to offer a comprehensive perspective of local government management through participation and mentorship. The chosen Intern must be willing to commit up to at least 80 hours of work over the duration of the internship (typically a college semester).
Essential Functions
- Assists with community engagement and preparation of conceptual plans, construction documents, master plans, reports and cost estimates.
- Utilizes basic knowledge of the principles, objectives and practices of landscape architecture and responds to inquiries in a professional and courteous manner; and provides information within scope of knowledge and authority.
- Works with other staff, as required, to assist in project implementation.
- Produces conceptual plans and/or construction drawings for Parks and Recreation Department projects.
- Produces perspective sketches, sections, maps, brochures, posters, or related visual displays.
Other Duties
- Maintain open communication with leadership on all aspects of assigned projects.
- Effectively interact and work cooperatively with supervisors, fellow staff members, members of the community, and elected/appointed officials.
- Attend professional training and job-related seminars, courses, meetings as part of job duties and educational requirements.
- Assist with site visits to ongoing construction projects.
- Maintain compliance with all government regulations and standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Current enrollment in college or graduate school.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Intern must be an undergraduate or graduate student in a Landscape Architect program
- Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite and/or SketchUp.
Other Information
- This is not a KPERS covered position.
- Position will work less than 1000 hours in a 12-month period.
