Fleet Maintenance Technician
Location: Baltimore, MD
Reports To: Service Manager
Job Summary
The Fleet Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing the organization’s fleet of vehicles to ensure safety, reliability, and uninterrupted operations. This role performs routine and preventive maintenance, troubleshoots mechanical and electrical systems, responds to vehicle breakdowns, and supports fleet continuity by delivering spare vehicles when needed. The technician works independently while adhering to all safety, environmental, DOT, and company protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular diagnostic tests on fleet vehicles and equipment
- Inspect engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and mechanical components to identify functional or safety issues
- Conduct routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake repairs, and fluid replacements
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on fleet vehicles
- Perform inspections and preventive maintenance to support long-term fleet reliability
- Respond to vehicle breakdowns, including traveling to roadside or off-site locations as required
- Drive spare trucks or vehicles to drivers experiencing breakdowns to ensure routes continue uninterrupted
- Transport broken-down vehicles to authorized repair shops or maintenance facilities
- Conduct road tests and operational checks to verify repairs are completed properly and vehicles are safe to operate
- Maintain accurate and detailed maintenance, repair, inspection, and breakdown response records
- Schedule and track preventive maintenance activities to minimize downtime
- Order replacement parts and maintain inventory of commonly used tools and supplies
- Coordinate maintenance schedules and repair priorities with fleet management and operations teams
- Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA standards, DOT requirements, and environmental regulations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Participate in emergency response, on-call rotations, weekend coverage, and after-hours maintenance as needed
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems
- Proficiency with diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and maintenance software
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex vehicle issues independently
- Strong organizational skills to manage maintenance schedules, records, and inventory
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work effectively under pressure
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety and quality workmanship
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Vocational or technical training in vehicle or equipment maintenance preferred
- Minimum of (3) years of fleet maintenance experience required
- Solid understanding of mechanical systems and mechanisms
- Working knowledge of electrical systems
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, manuals, and technical diagrams
- Air Brake Certification preferred but not required; training may be provided for qualified candidates
Physical Requirements
- Ability to diagnose vehicle and equipment issues and perform required repairs or preventive maintenance
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects up to 70 pounds
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during repairs and inspections
- Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach
- Ability to work from different elevations including under vehicles or on lifts
- Repetitive use of hands, wrists, arms, and fingers for tools and diagnostics
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required
- Ability to work in heat, cold, humidity, noise, outdoor weather, and roadside conditions
- Visual acuity sufficient to read gauges, screens, and technical documents
Work Environment
- Work is performed in a fast-paced industrial environment with exposure to heat, humidity, noise, exhaust, and moving machinery. Strict adherence to safety procedures and consistent use of PPE are required.
Work Schedule
- Standard schedule: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Weekend availability required
- Emergency on-call participation required
- Flexibility required for outages, installations, and off-hours maintenance
Travel Requirements
- Occasional travel required for roadside breakdown response, vendor coordination, training, or off-site facility support.
DOT / CDL Compliance Requirements
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Must meet company requirements for operating fleet vehicles
- Ability to pass and maintain a DOT physical in accordance with FMCSA regulations, as applicable
- Compliance with all DOT and FMCSA regulations, including required drug and alcohol testing
- CDL preferred but not required based on assignment; must maintain appropriate license, endorsements, and medical certification if applicable
- Must immediately report any license suspension, restriction, or revocation
