Description

SUMMARY

The Custodian maintains the four church buildings by providing custodial and housekeeping services within the established procedures and policies of the parish.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties or functions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Cleans and resupplies restrooms. 
  • Performs general cleaning and disinfecting using approved solvents and appropriate tools.
  • Maintains floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors, vacuuming, and cleaning carpeting.
  • Maintains building interiors by dusting and polishing furniture, equipment, mirrors and fixtures; washing windows, counters, walls and woodwork. 
  • Removes trash by emptying trash containers; transports materials to disposal area; recycles materials.
  • Services and/or reports mechanical malfunctions.
  • Performs seasonal work surrounding special meetings and events. 
  • Is aware of, reports, and removes possible safety hazards.
  • Cleans, hallways, washrooms, lavatories, rooms, drinking fountains, offices, cafeteria, entrances, etc., on a weekly basis.
  • Inspects and cleans walls for graffiti and markings, if necessary.
  • Performs light maintenance as directed.
  • Checks outside buildings for damage, litter and /or conditions or general deterioration.
  • Performs scheduled monthly, semiannual, or annual janitorial duties, i.e., floor waxing, window washing, carpet cleaning, etc., as directed in accordance with parish maintenance schedule.
  • Cleans the rectory by dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing and vacuuming. Develops a cleaning schedule to assure the house is maintained in an orderly manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding parish operations and conversations.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Continually monitors timeliness to achieve timely completion of all jobs.
  • Performs other duties as requested and needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

CATHOLIC FAITH

Requires an appreciation and respect for the Catholic Church and its teachings. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Must possess necessary janitorial skills, the ability to perform outlined task with minimum supervision, be self-motivated and have some general knowledge of janitorial supplies and their applications. Have the ability to maintain confidentiality in all matters. Must successfully pass Diocesan background screening and Safe Environment Training. 


SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to communicate in English - both oral and written form.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships, demonstrates sensitivity, and respect a diverse population.
  • Ability to properly schedule, prioritizes, and completes tasks within allocated time.
  • Requires knowledge of the proper use and disposal of hazardous materials, safe handling techniques, and use of proper safety equipment as outlined by OSHA.


WORKING CONDITIONS

This person will need to be available in the evening and weekends, as needed. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. They are as follows: Balancing, carrying, climbing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, sitting, standing, reaching, crawling, stooping, bending, and walking. The employee is required to lift up to 30 pounds and climb step-stools or ladders.
