POSITION SUMMARY 

The purpose of the Volunteer Coordinator (VC) position is to ensure that Lawrence Street Shelter (LSS), Lawrence Street Community Center (LSCC), and 48th Avenue Shelter (48th) staff are equipped to provide each volunteer with the best possible opportunity for a positive experience. 



RESPONSIBILITIES 

Coordinating 

  • Work with kitchen staff to see that volunteer shifts are adequately filled. 
  • Ensure staff are offering an appropriate type and number of tasks for volunteer shifts. Be present to support volunteers during meal service shifts during work hours. When not present, support other staff to supervise volunteers. 
  • Assist volunteers in scheduling, canceling, or modifying their volunteer shifts.  
  • Coordinate with facility staff to determine needs that can be met by volunteers. Work with volunteer supervisors to create and refine volunteer opportunities, including long-term, short-term, and special projects. 
  • Assist Volunteer Services and Development teams with special events, projects, etc. taking place at LSS, LSCC, or 48th. 
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries on the shared volunteer phone line and email. Fill in for other staff as needed. 
  • Assist with the creation of long-term volunteer roles and ensure responsible staff are following through on volunteer processes. 
  • Screen and onboard new long-term volunteers. Facilitate handoff to appropriate staff supervisor for volunteer training. 
  • Train staff at each facility that supervise volunteers and prepare them to facilitate positive volunteer experiences.  
  • Assist with volunteer discipline as needed. 
  • Other activities as assigned by Director of Volunteer Services. 
  • (48th Only) Act as a point of contact for all DRM court-ordered community service volunteers: 
  • Respond to inquiries and communicate sign up process.  
  • Screen and schedule court-ordered community service volunteers.  
  • Record and report hours to courts 
  • Maintain accurate records of completed community service volunteers 

Tracking 

  • Develop proficient working knowledge of the volunteer database (Salesforce). 
  • Set goals for and audit monthly volunteer hour reports. 
  • Complete monthly report of completed tasks and accomplishments.   
  • Maintain list of current volunteer needs at each facility and verify postings are up to date in the volunteer database and other recruitment sites. 

Recruitment 

  • Attend volunteer recruitment and community speaking events as needed. 
  • Intentionally look for ways to cultivate and invite volunteers into a higher level of commitment in a long-term volunteer position or regular meal service opportunity.  
  • Provide or facilitate tours of LSS, LSCC, or 48th as needed. 
  • Develop new volunteer opportunities and pursue volunteers to participate. 
  • Communicate with Development staff concerning donors serving in each facility.  

Relationship Building 

  • Ensure volunteers have a positive and productive experience to encourage word-of-mouth advertising and repeat volunteering. 
  • Maintain relationships with volunteers for feedback, appreciation, recruitment, networking, etc. 
  • Develop transformational opportunities through volunteer orientation, engagement, education, and debriefing.  

Volunteer Services Department Enrichment  

  • Participate in Volunteer Services/Development staff meetings, retreat days, volunteer days and other team events. 
  • Participate in annual training opportunities for professional enrichment. 
  • Crosstrain on departmental responsibilities to occasionally cover for teammates. 
Requirements

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Prefer Bachelor of Arts or comparable degree in business, community development or related field – or equivalent work experience. 
  • Previous experience in volunteer management preferred. 
  • Experience public speaking and facilitating groups. 
  • Customer service skills including excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to effectively develop and promote staff and community relationships.  
  • Must be a self-starter who is highly organized, flexible and committed to serving all who interact with DRM. 
  • Strong computer experience with proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook, and database knowledge. 
  • Must be a Christian holding to the beliefs set forth in the Statement of Faith, expressed by a personal testimony and Christian conduct. 

NOTE: A limited amount of work-related travel may be required.
