SHOP INTERN
Description

The Shop Assistant supports day-to-day operations within the production and warehouse environment by performing non-hazardous, entry-level tasks. This role is specifically designed for employees ages 16–17 and is structured to comply with all federal and state child labor laws, including restrictions on hazardous occupations. The position emphasizes learning, organization, and safe workplace practices under direct supervision.


RESPONSIBILITIES: 

General Shop Support (Permitted Tasks Only):

  • Assist with kitting and staging parts for production jobs
  • Perform inventory organization and cycle counts
  • Label components, wires, and packaging materials
  • Support order packing and shipping preparation
  • Conduct light cleaning and housekeeping (non-hazardous areas only)
  • Assist with documentation, filing, and ERP data entry
  • Organize hardware, fasteners, and small parts bins
  • Participate in supervised training and job shadowing activities

PROHIBITED DUTIES (STRICTLY ENFORCED)

This position does NOT permit the employee to perform or assist with any hazardous tasks, including but not limited to:

Power-Driven Equipment:

  • Operating, cleaning, adjusting, or assisting with saws, drills, grinders, cutting tools, or punch equipment
  • CNC machines, routers, or fabrication machinery
  • Wire processing or automated cutting equipment

Material Handling Equipment:

  • Operating or riding on forklifts, powered pallet jacks, lifts, or hoists

Production / Fabrication Work:

  • Panel drilling, cutting, machining, or fabrication
  • Working directly with energized electrical systems
  • Assisting with machine setup, maintenance, or operation

Construction / Installation Activities:

  • Jobsite work involving installation, roofing, excavation, or elevated work

Additional Restrictions:

  • Driving company vehicles
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals, radiation, or unsafe environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT CONTROLS

  • Work is limited to designated safe zones within the facility
  • Employee must remain under direct supervision when in production areas
  • Physical barriers or visual controls are used to separate restricted equipment
  • All tasks must be pre-approved by a supervisor
Requirements
  • Required Minimum Education: Currently enrolled in High School (Age 16–17) 
  • Expected Experience: Entry-Level
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to safety guidelines
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Basic computer skills (data entry preferred)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and take direction
  • Demonstrates reliability and willingness to learn

Training & Safety Requirements

  • Completion of New Hire Safety Orientation 
  • Review and acknowledgment of Restricted Equipment & Hazardous Tasks 
  • Ongoing supervision and task-specific safety guidance
