Description

The School Custodian is a vital member of the school staff responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment within the school premises. The Custodian is involved in a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall well-being and functionality of the school.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary job duties and responsibilities:

  • Sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors to keep them clean and free from debris.
  • Cleans and sanitizes classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, and other areas on a regular basis.
  • Empties and cleans trash cans and recycling bins, ensuring proper waste separation.
  • Dusts and wipes down surfaces, including desks, windowsills, and fixtures.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms, restocking supplies as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains cleanliness in restrooms throughout the day.
  • Assists in setting up chairs, tables, and equipment for school events and meetings.
  • Cleans up after events and restores the space to its original condition.
  • Maintains a safe environment by promptly addressing spills, removing obstacles, and ensuring clear emergency exits.
  • Reports any safety hazards or security concerns to school administration.
  • Conducts routine checks on lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems to identify maintenance needs.
  • Reports maintenance issues beyond custodial scope to appropriate staff.
  • Uses eco-friendly cleaning products and practices to minimize the impact on the environment.
  • Follows proper procedures for waste disposal and chemical handling.
  • Works collaboratively with other custodians and school staff to ensure the overall cleanliness and functionality of the school.
  • Communicates effectively with teachers, students, and staff to address cleaning and maintenance needs.
  • Be adaptable to changing cleaning priorities based on school events and activities.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and appearance while interacting with students, staff, and visitors.
  • Adheres to school policies, safety regulations, and health guidelines.
  • Efficiently manages tasks and responsibilities to complete daily cleaning routines and respond to immediate cleaning needs.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

Necessary and desirable qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Must have a passion for improving educational opportunities for urban students and for building a strong, mission-driven organization.

  • Familiarity with cleaning equipment, chemicals, and techniques.
  • Basic understanding of safety protocols and procedures.
  • A keen eye for cleanliness and the ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization.
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and manage cleaning routines efficiently.
  • Good communication skills to interact with students, staff, and visitors in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential to ensure the school is properly maintained and ready for each school day.
  • Ability to identify cleaning needs and take initiative to address them without constant supervision.
  • Capacity to identify and resolve minor maintenance issues and communicate larger problems to appropriate staff.
  • Respect for diversity and the ability to interact respectfully with a diverse student and staff population.
  • Education Preferred:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • Experience Preferred:
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or cleaning experience is preferred.
  • Experience in a school or educational setting is beneficial.

Working Conditions

Custodians work indoors and outdoors, depending on the tasks and the school's layout. They may work in a variety of spaces, including classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, gyms, and outdoor areas. School custodians often work shifts that align with the school's schedule. This might include early morning, evening, or weekend shifts.

Exposure to Cleaning Agents and knowledge of proper handling, storage, and safety precautions is important.

Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant fine finger dexterity, and standing for extended periods. Stamina to handle the demands of cleaning and maintaining a school environment.

Occasional, minimal guidance, but follows established work methods.

Salary Description
$33,000-$35,000
