Description

Safely and effectively provide support to the manager and employees regarding various HR issues.  The AVP of Human Resources provides support to the Northwest Regional Manager and employees regarding benefits, leaves of absence, union issues, payroll issues, interpreting company policies, and other human resources issues.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintain current knowledge of and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, including Washington and Oregon labor and employment requirements.
  • Serve as a trusted HR advisor to managers and supervisors on employee relations matters, performance management, disciplinary actions, corrective action plans, and policy interpretation.
  • Guide and support managers through employee investigations, workplace concerns, conflict resolution, and documentation of employment actions.
  • Coordinate recruitment and staffing activities for Northwest locations, including workforce planning, requisition approvals, internal postings, candidate selection, and collaboration with Corporate Recruiting.
  • Facilitate new hire onboarding, orientation, and employee integration programs while ensuring compliance with required employment documentation and training.
  • Partner with Corporate Human Resources to maintain accurate employee records, personnel files in accordance with company policies and legal requirements.
  • Administer and coordinate employee leave programs, including FMLA, Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML), Oregon Family Leave programs, ADA accommodations, military leave, and other protected leaves of absence.
  • Provide guidance to employees and managers regarding vacation, sick leave, paid time off, protected leave entitlements, and attendance-related matters.
  • Support payroll administration by ensuring timely and accurate processing of employee deductions, benefit elections, leave-related pay adjustments, and employment status changes.
  • Reconcile monthly union benefit statements and union dues and maintain compliance with applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  • Assist management with interpretation and administration of collective bargaining agreements, partnering with the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Legal Department as needed.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), affirmative action requirements, disability accommodation obligations, and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Support compliance with Washington pay transparency, wage and hour, recordkeeping, and workplace posting requirements.
  • Partner with Corporate Safety regarding workers’ compensation claims, Washington Labor & Industries (L&I) matters, return-to-work processes, and related employee communications.
  • Foster positive employee relations and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, and union representatives. 
  • Conduct HR audits, reporting, research projects, and special initiatives to support organizational goals and continuous improvement.
  • Handle confidential and sensitive employee information with the highest degree of professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Perform additional human resources duties and special projects as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and Northwest Regional leadership
  • Interact with others in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Follow department and company procedures.
  • Keep up regular attendance and punctuality; regular attendance and punctuality are essential for the smooth operation of this company
  • Other duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the business. These responsibilities may change from time to time are business needs evolve over time.
Requirements

 Qualifications (KSA, professional certifications, education, experience, travel requirements)

  • Bachelor's degree in human resource management or a related field, and at least four years of related human resources, benefits and/or employee benefits administration experience.
  • Must have at least 7 years of experience working in a human resources department.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.)
  • Experience with HRIS, payroll and benefits databases. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Effective planning and priority setting. Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and communicate benefits contract language.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements, both adopted and pending, affecting employee benefits programs, including the ACA, ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, and workers' compensation.
  • Experience working in a union environment is strongly preferred. 
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Less than 25% travel requirement

Physical Demands/Requirements:

Constantly (over 2/3):

  • Operates computer and other office productivity machinery such as calculator, copy machine and printer.
  • Remain in a stationary position for 50% or more of the time
  • Review documents, organizes data and detects accuracy of information
  • Communicates with customers and co-workers and exchanges accurate information in-person, 

Frequently (1/3-2/3):

  • Moves throughout office accessing files, office machinery, etc.
  • telephonically and via electronic devices/e-mail

Occasionally (under 1/3):

  • Moves materials or documents up to 25 lbs
  • Moves across wet/slippery and uneven surfaces
  • Must be able to position self to perform duties around industrial equipment and materials that are hot or hazardous chemical materials
