WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING (essential duties) ...


The Marketing & Communications Intern will gain practical experience in storytelling, writing, content development, and event support while learning about behavioral health services, nonprofit communications strategy, and fundraising efforts. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to mission-driven work that increases awareness of mental health and substance use services in Newport County. 


Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Interview staff and gather information about programs, services, and outcomes

• Assist in the development of social media content, presentations, press releases, newsletters, and other communications materials

• Support fundraising and community engagement events

• Conduct research to support storytelling and communicate organizational impact

• Assist with general communications, marketing, and administrative tasks as needed

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Strong writing, storytelling, and verbal communication skills

• Interest in behavioral health, public health, communications, marketing, nonprofit management, or related fields

• Initiative, professionalism, and strong attention to detail

• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines

• Cultural humility and commitment to confidentiality

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and major social media platforms; familiarity with Canva is a plus


Learning Outcomes:

• Strengthen professional interviewing, writing, and communication skills

• Gain experience in nonprofit marketing, communications, and philanthropy

• Learn about behavioral health and substance use treatment systems and community-based care models

• Develop understanding of nonprofit branding, outreach, and donor engagement strategies


Other Duties:

• Perform all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

• Attending trainings and meetings as assigned.

• Adhere to safety policies including participation in fire/disaster drills.


Education and experience:

• Enrolled in a university or college program (junior or senior level preferred) in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, public health, nonprofit management, or a related field
