The Lead Electrical Commissioning Technician will play a key role in the commissioning of substations, surface facilities, transmission interconnections, and power generation assets across Fervo’s portfolio of geothermal energy projects. This role will oversee field execution, contractor coordination, commissioning schedules, documentation, testing, troubleshooting, and system handovers. The ideal candidate will have the ability to relocate to or reside in Milford, Utah during active commissioning efforts and will report directly to the Commissioning Senior Manager.
This is a hands-on, field-based leadership role suited for an experienced electrical commissioning professional with deep technical knowledge of power systems, substations, and grid interconnections. The Lead Electrical Commissioning Technician will serve as a key contributor to successful plant startups, integrated system readiness, and operational excellence across Fervo’s growing portfolio of geothermal developments.
Responsibilities
Commissioning Execution & Field Leadership
- Lead on-site commissioning activities for geothermal production facilities, substations, transmission interconnections, and power plant systems, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely energization and turnover
- Operate within Fervo’s hybrid commissioning model by coordinating internal team members, contractors, specialized vendors, and O&M technicians to achieve integrated system readiness
- Coordinate commissioning scopes across engineering, construction, ORC providers, vendors, utilities, and O&M teams through daily field meetings and structured progress tracking
- Represent commissioning during project readiness reviews, energization planning, and performance acceptance testing
- Manage, coach, mentor, and advise Fervo employees on commissioning execution, standards, and best practices
Electrical Testing, Startup & System Integration
- Lead functional testing, startup, and performance verification of electrical systems, substations, switchgear, transmission interconnections, and associated equipment
- Support energization activities and ensure electrical systems are commissioned in accordance with design requirements and applicable standards
- Verify system integration between electrical, control, and plant operating systems
- Coordinate testing activities with utilities, vendors, and engineering teams to ensure successful grid interconnection and operational readiness
- Support system performance validation and reliability testing during startup and early operations
Contractor, Vendor & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, engineering, construction, and operations teams to resolve commissioning issues and maintain schedule alignment
- Lead troubleshooting efforts during commissioning and early operations, coordinating with vendors and engineering teams to resolve technical issues and warranty items
- Support third-party commissioning scopes and vendor activities within hybrid teams consisting of internal and external resources
- Foster strong communication and collaboration across project stakeholders to ensure safe and successful project execution
Quality, Safety & Documentation
- Enforce quality, safety, and environmental standards from pre-commissioning through final handover
- Proactively identify and mitigate commissioning risks to support compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements
- Organize and lead walkdowns and inspections to verify compliance with commissioning procedures, contract requirements, and turnover criteria
- Ensure management-of-change processes are followed to document scope changes and maintain configuration control through turnover
- Maintain accurate commissioning records, test documentation, punch lists, turnover packages, and system acceptance documentation
System Performance & Continuous Improvement
- Oversee system performance testing and initial reliability data collection to validate operational standards and performance requirements
- Support root cause investigations and corrective action implementation during startup and early operations
- Capture lessons learned and commissioning best practices to improve future project execution
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of commissioning standards, procedures, and documentation processes
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Controls Engineering, or equivalent field experience
- 5+ years of commissioning experience in power generation, energy, utilities, or other complex industrial facilities
- Strong understanding of industrial safety practices and demonstrated commitment to safe work execution
- Deep understanding of three-phase electrical power systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), substations, and power distribution systems
- Proven success managing third-party commissioning scopes and vendor activities within hybrid project teams
- Deep understanding of plant systems integration and relevant industry standards and regulations
- Proven leadership experience in field-based commissioning, construction, or operations environments
- Strong understanding of power plant electrical systems, testing methodologies, and startup processes
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to execute multiple concurrent commissioning scopes
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, contractor management, and stakeholder coordination
- Collaborative mindset with demonstrated experience leading highly effective cross-functional teams
Preferred Qualifications

- Expertise in electrical grid interconnections and associated testing requirements and standards
- Advanced knowledge of power plant design, operations, and maintenance
- Experience with geothermal, utility-scale power generation, renewable energy, or industrial facilities
- Advanced knowledge of asset condition monitoring technologies or willingness to obtain relevant certifications
- Familiarity with commissioning frameworks such as NETA ATS, NETA ECS, ASHRAE, and structured document turnover systems
- Project management, commissioning, or O&M certifications such as PMP, CxA, CMRP, or equivalent
- Experience supporting utility coordination, transmission systems, or substation commissioning activities
Location
Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX with growing offices in Oakland, CA, Golden, CO, Salt Lake City, UT and Reno, NV. This position is located at the Cape Station facility in Milford, UT, with some hybrid work flexibility when commissioning activities are not ongoing. The role involves coordination with construction and commissioning teams and may require extended hours during critical startup periods.
