Requirements

Responsibilities

Construction Observation & Quality Assurance

  • Provide daily on-site construction observation of commercial/industrial roofing projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, design specifications, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Monitor construction for safety, workmanship, material usage, adherence to schedule, and potential risks.
  • Oversee a wide range of complex commercial roofing projects, including deck replacement, demolition, tapered insulation systems, substrate modifications, and work in challenging industrial rooftop environments.
  • Monitor the project schedule to ensure projects are on time and on budget, advising the internal project manager and/or team on schedule risks and estimated completion.
  • Perform final inspections, identify deficiencies/incomplete items requiring correction, and issue a completion punch list.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare detailed Daily Construction Reports (DCRs) to document project progress, action items, schedule adherence, unit cost accounting, material storage, workmanship quality, site conditions, and any deficiencies.
  • Use company technology (iPad, mobile apps, ERP system) to timely record, upload, and distribute reports and photos.
  • Develop closeout documentation packages including summaries, punch lists, and completion certifications.

Client & Contractor Communication

  • Serve as the primary on-site representative of the client, ensuring their interests are protected.
  • Lead or participate in pre-construction and weekly progress meetings with clients, contractors, and manufacturers to align on scope, logistics, and expectations.
  • Collaborate with internal project managers and senior consultants on technical questions, change orders, and field issues.

Technical Review & Support

  • Review contractor pre-construction shop drawings and submittals in coordination with Benchmark's internal project manager.
  • Assist Staff Consultants, Senior Consultants and internal project teams with roof evaluations, infrared moisture surveys, and design investigations.
  • Identify potential constructability issues and propose solutions to prevent delays or rework.

Teamwork & Process Improvement

  • Partner with project support staff to ensure timely and accurate deliverables.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by sharing field insights and lessons learned.
  • Mentor and train other consultants and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
  • Foster strong internal working relationships by supporting open communication, issue resolution, and workload balance.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure Benchmark's adherence to OSHA and client-specific safety requirements while on project sites.
  • Maintain certifications and training relevant to field safety and commercial roof construction environments.

Key Relationships

The Roof Consultant (Field) reports to the Roof Operations Manager and is responsible for providing quality assurance observation and documentation during the construction phase of our clients' commercial roofing projects. They will work closely with Project Managers, Staff/Senior Consultants, Account Managers, Drafters and Project Coordinators as well as with external stakeholders including our clients, commercial roof contractors, and manufacturers.


Qualifications

Required

  • Willing and able to travel nationwide on a weekly basis by air and vehicle (automobile). Approximately 90-95% of the time.
  • Relevant experience in commercial/industrial roof design, construction, and quality assurance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including interpretation of drawings and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients, contractors, and project teams.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office 365 products (Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Able to use mobile technology (iPad, smartphone, laptop).
  • Able to independently manage and deliver multiple project tasks with limited supervision, demonstrating strong organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and a commitment to technical excellence, quality, integrity, and dependability.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to: (1) lift at least 50 pounds, (2) access the client's roof through the use of ladders, stairs, and/or steps, (3) sit, stand, walk, and stoop for extended periods of time, and (4) crawl in and out of otherwise inaccessible locations on an occasional/as needed basis.

Preferred

  • 2-year degree (Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • IIBEC Registered Roof Observer (RRO) credential (or willingness to obtain) – strong preference will be given to candidates who hold this credential.
  • Experience with on-site construction phase services and quality assurance inspection in commercial roofing or related field/industry.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (Benchmark uses Deltek Vantagepoint).
  • Experience working in EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) environments.
