Senior Editor, Home Design
Fully Remote Remote Worker - N/A
Description

Fine Homebuilding is looking for and experienced editor to cover home design.

You love homes and care deeply about home design. Whether it’s an original colonial farmhouse, a shingle-style Victorian, a midcentury modern ranch, or a new passive house, you know what makes a home beautiful, functional, and enduring. You care about the nuances between preservation, restoration, and remodeling and you know that great new home is more than the latest trends in flooring and tile but must also include a floor plan that works for the owners, a durable enclosure that provides comfort and efficiency, and a healthy interior. You have a proven record of writing about houses, and you’re excited by the opportunity to produce videos about them. To travel the country with a camera bag and video crew, coming home with everything you need for magazine articles and documentary-style videos about the homes you visit sounds like a dream job. Yes? Keep reading…

Fine Homebuilding has been a trusted authority in home design and construction for decades. From our print magazine to our jobsite videos to our HOUSES awards, we’re the go-to source of information and inspiration for design and construction professionals, owner-builders, DIYers, and people who just love their homes. We’ve always covered home design, but we’re about to take an even deeper dive, which is where you come in.

We're looking for a motivated senior editor to grow with us and own our home design coverage in print and online. With the support and guidance of our editorial director, you’ll have the opportunity to imagine and execute a plan for our home design content across all media. This is a fully supported creative role. We have a print team, video team, digital editors, and a social media manager to support your work. What we need from you is vision and content creation in all its forms.

Proven writing skills are a must. We need someone who is comfortable with a camera, being on camera, hosting podcasts, and presenting at events. And a love and understanding of houses, old and new, is non-negotiable. If that’s you, tell us why. But don't send a resume without a cover letter. We won’t look at it. We'll be responding to applicants who tell us why they’re the right fit for the job and what excites them about the role.

What you’ll do:

· Curate our home design coverage: The first step in all of this is to find homes to share. Projects should range from period appropriate preservation projects to remodels that sensitively update aging homes, to high-performing new homes. Over the course of a year, you’ll publish houses from all periods, all styles, and all corners of the country.

· Produce house-tour videos: Working with a video team you’ll produce documentary-style videos on the projects you find. You’ll write the script, help direct the shoots, and host our home design video program

· Write print articles about houses: Working with the print team, you’ll cover an old house, new house, or home design topic, in every issue of the magazine. These articles will be inspirational and informative for our discerning audience, taking a deep dive into the most important details that made the projects successful.

· Launch and host a home design podcast: Working with the editorial director and digital editors, you’ll develop and host a new podcast that gives voice to the most authoritative and engaging home design enthusiasts from across the country.

· Cover products for home design enthusiasts: You’ll build a team of writers who can find and cover building materials, fixtures, and other products, both the things that make old house projects sing, and those that make new homes special.

· Attend and speak at events: FHB attends all the important building events; you’ll focus on covering home design events and eventually speak at them.

Requirements

What you’ll bring to the team:

· Proven writing skills: At least three years of experience writing about houses and home design, preferably for a newspaper, magazine or website, but we’ll consider bloggers too.

· Passion for the subject matter: Whether you have a degree in architecture, jobsite experience, or just an abiding passion, you’re enthusiastic about houses, residential design, and remodeling, and can speak the language.

· A collaborative mindset: You’re comfortable working on a team, know when to ask for help or feedback, and put the quality of the work above your ego.

· Reliability: You regularly meet deadlines, communicate clearly, and ask for help when needed.

· Photography and video skills: It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s a strong plus if you can take great still photos, edit basic videos, or are willing to learn. To be willing to be on video is a big plus. To be willing to host a podcast is a must.
