Job Summary

 A Field Calibration Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the operation and maintenance of measurement equipment and procedures at various customer locations. The person hired for this position is expected to perform routine and complex work related to the repair and calibration of optical measuring systems, 3-axis video measuring systems, (both manual and CNC), and mechanical testing equipment using specialized tools and procedures. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision while providing exceptional customer service. 


Job Responsibilities

  • Calibration of Optical Comparators, Vision Systems, Hardness Testers, and granite surface plates, etc.
  • Interface with customers to facilitate their calibration requirements.
  • Frequent travel is required, a combination of nearby travel and distance travel:
    • Calibration is performed onsite at customers' facilities. Many locations are within driving distance of our office and will not require an overnight stay.
    • Some overnight travel is required, estimated at 20%. 
  • Perform calibrations, modifications, diagnoses, and repairs on several types of tests and measurement equipment.
  • Replace or repair defective components, parts, or systems, as needed, to secure client-focused solutions.
  • Communicate with operational staff and customers to determine needs in areas such as repairs, alignments, technical assistance, and any other areas of concern.
  • Assist in training new technicians.
  • Maintain an increased technical proficiency and effectiveness through on-the-job training and self-study. Opportunity and need to learn other forms of calibration.
  • Accurately and efficiently complete necessary documentation and reports, as required.
  • Assist operational staff, when necessary, to maintain a high level of customer interaction and satisfaction.
  • Develop calibration procedures and measurement systems for customers’ equipment in compliance with our quality requirements.
  • Assure compliance with internal quality systems; perform quality assurance functions to ensure calibration reports comply with all pertinent customer requirements. 
  • Verify all laboratory standards/test equipment are within calibration dates prior to use.
  • Ensure all customer-owned equipment is serviced and returned within the turnaround time promised to the customer.
  • Coordinate with operational staff regarding the status of customer equipment, lab personnel, and any problems or situations that arise during calibration.
  • Perform other laboratory support functions, as required, for the efficient and orderly operation of the facility.
  • Use standard hand tools, measurement and test equipment, computers and computer peripherals, material handling devices, and other common office and electronic test equipment.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Higher education coursework in related fields (optical engineering, electronics, metrology, etc.) preferred.
  • Work experience in a laboratory setting or with electronics preferred within the metrology industry.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.

Preferred Skills

  • High level math skills
  • Sharp hand-eye coordination
  • Excellent communication skills and confident speaking with internal and external customers
  • Familiarity with electronic measurement equipment
  • Technical training and experience in Metrology, Electronics, or a related field.
  • Good time management
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data and other information.
  • Ability to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Physically capable and able to move heavy lapping plates repeatedly.
  • Ability to calculate and apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to practical situations.
