The Position:
The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the organization’s Safety Program across all Umpqua Indian Development Corporation (UIDC) properties. This role collaborates with personnel at all levels to ensure a safe and compliant work environment. The Safety Manager conducts regular audits and inspections, ensuring adherence to safety regulations such as OSHA guidelines, Tribal Law, and Ordinance Codes. Additionally, the role investigates the root causes of accidents, prepares detailed reports, and drives hazard mitigation strategies.
Safety Program Development & Management
- Continuously develop, improve, and manage the organization’s Safety Program.
- Identify safety policy requirements and implement necessary improvements.
Safety Inspections & Audits
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits across all UIDC properties to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Assist with food safety inspections of food outlets to maintain health and safety standards.
Training & Development
- Coordinate and deliver required safety and health training for all team members and management.
- Conduct all in-person safety trainings that require certification or hands-on demonstration, including powered industrial trucks, forklift certification and renewals, scissor lift training, and respiratory fit testing.
Coordinate and conduct Bloodborne Pathogens training. - Oversee OSHA-required annual safety trainings and refresher courses.
Provide training on lockout/tagout procedures. - Manage and track all required safety trainings and certifications in partnership with the e-learning platform.
Claims & Incident Management
- Initiate and manage Workers’ Compensation claims, track costs, and ensure proper reporting.
- Coordinate light duty assignments related to Workers' Compensation claims.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure full compliance with Tribal Workers' Compensation Codes, Tribal Ordinances, and all UIDC safety rules and regulations.
- Oversee and manage the UIDC Drivers Program, ensuring driver qualification, compliance, and required training standards are met.
- Serve as the liaison with regulatory agencies to ensure adherence to all applicable safety standards and reporting requirements.
- Maintain and regularly update Safety Data Sheets (SDS) within the Velocity EHS system.
- Lead hazard mitigation efforts by investigating accidents, identifying root causes and recommending corrective solutions.
Leadership & Safety Committee
- Serve as the Chairperson for the Safety Committee, preparing materials for monthly meetings.
- Provide recommendations for the Safety budget to ensure adequate resource allocation.
Guest Relations & Communication
- Establish contact with guests to address health and safety complaints and resolve any issues promptly.
- Communicate safety-related updates and policies to all team members clearly and effectively.

- Experience: 3-5 years of experience in safety management or coordination.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field preferred. Relevant work experience may substitute for a degree.
- Certifications:
- OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification, or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe, preferred.
- OSHA Authorized Trainer certification, or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe, preferred.
- Forklift/Powered Industrial Truck Train-the-Trainer certification required or ability to obtain.
- Relevant Train-the-Trainer certifications for safety programs and equipment (e.g., scissor lifts, aerial lifts, lockout/tagout, Bloodborne Pathogens) or ability to obtain.
- Respiratory Protection Fit Test certification (qualitative or quantitative) or ability to obtain.
- Ability to obtain a Food Handlers License required.
- Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and various safety training software programs.
- Ability to conduct ergonomic assessments in the workplace.
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines, and Federal SDS record-keeping guidelines.
- Ability to use friction devices to measure surface conditions in facilities.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, electrical safety standards, local fire codes, and fire alarm systems.
- Familiarity with food service safety applications (or ability to learn).
- Ability to perform duties in confined spaces.
- Current and valid driver’s license with the ability to qualify for the UIDC’s Drivers Program.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class III Gaming License.
