Impact Summary:
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design development, integration, sustainment, and modernization of critical mechanical systems for military aircraft. You will serve as a technical authority for complex aircraft modifications, prototype development, airworthiness substantiation, and production support initiatives. Your expertise will ensure the effective integration of innovative solutions and maintenance practices that meet rigorous defense standards, directly influencing mission readiness and operational safety. This position requires independent technical judgment, leadership of multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to solve complex engineering challenges with minimal supervision. Your role is pivotal in driving advancements in aerospace technology and mechanical engineering within the defense sector.
Responsibilities:
· Support APSD Project Leads with estimation, scheduling and requirements documentation in support of major naval aviation system upgrade and prototyping efforts.
· Investigate, design, develop, and test mechanical and structural systems, components, and tools for military aircraft, adhering to aerospace standards.
· Lead the mechanical design and documentation of complex mechanical systems, structural modifications, mounting provisions, fairings, support equipment, and mission systems installations.
· Support engineering and production process development/revision
· Analyze requirements and develop comprehensive plans and technical data packages for mechanical assemblies and systems.
· Oversee the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of aircraft components and support equipment.
· Develop and implement maintenance and testing procedures for mechanical systems.
· Solve mechanical and thermal issues to ensure optimal operation and cooling of devices.
· Support and promote expansion of Additive Manufacturing Capabilities.
· Prototype development and testing to confirm system fit and functionality.
· Review and provide feedback on engineering analyses, technical documentation, and sustainment initiatives.
· Develop advanced 3D models using PTC Creo Parametric, utilizing skeleton models, surface modeling, shrinkwraps, and top-down design methodologies to support complex aircraft modifications and interfaces.
· Generate and review engineering drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.100, Y14.24, Y14.35, and related drafting standards.
· Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5 to establish functional datum schemes, support manufacturing requirements, and ensure inspection compliance.
· Independently develop and review complete Technical Data Packages (TDPs), engineering analyses, and installation documentation.
· Ability to perform classical hand calculations to substantiate structural modifications (e.g., bracket designs, fastener shear/bearing, margin of safety).
· Experience developing engineering analyses, reports, and drawings to support flight clearances and airworthiness releases utilizing references Mil-HDBK-516, NAVAIRINST 13034.1, NAWCADINST 13050.1.
· Utilize PTC Windchill to manage CAD data, product structure (WTParts), and configuration baselines throughout the product lifecycle.
· Experience with manufacturing tools and methods in both sheet metal and machine shops (including CNC equipment, mills, lathes, press brakes, and water jets) to ensure designs are optimized for organic fabrication, assembly, and hangar installation.
· Support the recommendation, research, development and implementation of investment solicitations.
· Develop and conduct training to enhance engineering and production capabilities.
· Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams; manage and prioritize the workload of junior engineering personnel.
· Provide technical mentorship in mechanical design, drafting standards, CAD modeling, GD&T application, and engineering best practices.
· Ensure adherence to all relevant policies, standards, and procedures, maintaining data integrity and verifiability.

Qualifications:
· BA/BS in Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
· Minimum of 10 years’ experience in mechanical engineering, specifically in military or aerospace applications.
· Demonstrated experience in the design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
· Advanced proficiency in Mechanical Design (Naval Aviation).
· Expert-level CAD (PTC Creo/Windchill) experience.
· Extensive experience in estimation, schedule and proposal development.
· Must have Manufacturing/Production experience.
· Demonstrated experience in production optimization desired.
· Working knowledge of aerospace and defense quality standards, including AS9100 QMS, with experience supporting continuous improvement experience desired.
· Ability to independently perform structural calculations and engineering analyses supporting aircraft modifications and airworthiness approvals.
· Experience designing, modifying, integrating, or qualifying aircraft weapon stores, launchers, suspension equipment, or associated support equipment desired.
· Familiarity with MIL-STD-1760 aircraft/store interfaces and weapon system safety certification requirements desired.
· Experience utilizing AVPLM, IETMS, V-22 repositories, and other Naval Aviation technical data systems desired.
· Experience utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS, NASTRAN, or equivalent for structural, thermal, or vibration analysis desired.
· Experience designing components optimized for additive manufacturing for rapid prototyping applications to include fit checks and permanent aircraft installations desired.
· No specific special training or substitutions required.
· Must be a U.S. citizen and can obtain a US Security Clearance to the level of SECRET.
Travel:
· Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
Salary Information:
The estimated salary rage for this position will be $150,000 - $185,000 annually based on the successful candidates experience, qualifications, skill set, work location, and market conditions. Pay and Benefits are subject to change at any time and may be modified at the discretion of the company.
