Description

The EHS Specialist supports site operations by facilitating a collaborative culture in which safety is considered first before engaging in any activities at the site. This person will be a hands-on influential leader with the primary focus of executing Halocarbon’s EHS management systems, ensuring compliance with life-safety systems, and applicable industry standards. They will serve as a change agent to stimulate culture change while applying Halocarbon values.


Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Identifying, assessing, and mitigating EHS related risk (i.e., periodic spot checks, MOC & PSSR support, JSA, etc.) and supporting the life-safety permit process, including safe work, line break, hot work, etc.
  • Providing high-quality individual/small group feedback through spot checks, audits, safety contacts, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Simplifying, maintaining, and auditing compliance with Halocarbon’s management systems.
  • Updating assigned policy, procedures, and associated training materials.
  • Develop and deliver EHS & Emergency Response, Security training. Support LMS, safety meetings, and other training systems as needed.
  • Reviewing and executing EHS department PMs, or other tasks owned by other departments to ensure proper completion (i.e., First aid stations, safety shower evaluation, elevated work / anchor points, fixed / portable ladder evaluations, elevated work equipment, gas monitoring equipment maintenance, etc.).
  • Developing, capturing and classifying safety data (near misses, 1st aids, etc.).
  • Supporting incident investigations and ensuring close-out and communication of incidents.
  • Actively lead and participate in the site safety committee and site safety subcommittees.
  • Actively lead and guide ER leaders in emergency response team membership, EOC, ER/Security Drills, headcount system, training programs, ER equipment, and interfacing with local ER agencies
  • Maintain the approved PPE list, PPE matrix / risk assessment, and PPE evaluations as needed.
  • Promote the health of employees by supporting the employee physical processes, case management, IH assessments, and providing first aid / guidance to first responders on injury care. 
  • Develop, update and execute industrial hygiene plan & risk assessment with input from IH consultants and EHS Director, as well as conduct sampling (e.g. IH sampling when/where required).
  • Completing assigned skills evaluations, self-study, training, assigned readings and exercises.
  • Achieving and maintaining applicable certifications. (Examples include: First Aid/CPR/AED, Certified Safety Technician; backup support for Wastewater Operator, DOT Shipper, Hazmat Shipper, as needed).
  • Provide after-hours and evening support and response to the plant. 
  • Execute other assigned projects and tasks as needed.

This person should be a team-oriented leader; curious, with an investigative mindset. Able to effectively provide feedback, as well as collaborate and communicate with their audiences. The individual must show care for employees and the plant by upholding a culture of strong discipline and attention to details.


Requirements

Education and/or Experience 

  • High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent. University degree or professional certificate preferred.
  • Commitment to work towards technical and professional certifications.
  • Industrial / manufacturing experience (Chemical preferred).
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite to include Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.

Safety/Essential Functions

  • Must be able to climb and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Must be capable of and willing to learn, new skills and tasks.
  • Must be capable of working where chemical odors may exist at permissible threshold limits of exposure.
  • Must be able to evacuate the plant and report to muster point in the event of an emergency or drill.
  • Must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time.
