Role Overview
Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) and Personal Assistants in Kentucky provide essential non-medical, hands-on support to individuals with disabilities. Operating within the home and community, this role enables participants to live independently by assisting with daily living tasks, health monitoring, and maintaining a safe environment.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Personal Care: Provide hands-on assistance with daily hygiene, including bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
- Mobility & Safety: Offer transfer assistance and walking support to ensure the individual remains safe in their home and community.
- Household Support: Perform light housekeeping tasks such as laundry, washing dishes, and tidying living spaces to maintain a healthy environment.
- Nutritional Support: Assist with meal planning, preparation, and feeding as identified in the participant’s Person-Centered Service Plan.
- Health Monitoring: Observe physical or mental changes, provide medication reminders, and assist with self-administration of prescribed medications according to regulations.
- Companionship & Assistance: Offer emotional support and aid with errands, transportation to appointments, or social activities to encourage community involvement.
Requirements
Requirements and Qualifications in Kentucky
- Training: Complete agency-specific training, including First Aid/CPR and CORE training from the College of Direct Support.
- Skills: Ability to follow Person-Centered Service Plans, demonstrate empathy, and maintain professional communication with families and teams.
- Physical Ability: Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds for client transfers or positioning.
- Compliance: Must pass all Kentucky-required background checks: Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), Nurse Aid Registry (KNAR), Central Registry (CAN), TB screening, and drug screening.
- Licensing: Maintain a current, valid Kentucky Driver’s License and proper vehicle insurance if providing transportation.
