About You

You are an experienced ecological risk assessor and/or ecotoxicologist with hands-on experience across the full ecological risk assessment process under CERCLA, state Superfund equivalents, RCRA corrective action, and related regulatory frameworks-from screening-level assessment through baseline ecological risk assessment (BERA). You also bring experience in natural resource damage assessment (NRDA), including injury determination and quantification, evaluation of lost ecological services, and scaling of compensatory restoration. You understand where ecological risk assessment and NRDA intersect, which technical work carries across both, and where the questions and standards diverge. You know how to translate toxicology, ecology, and field data into defensible, well-written regulatory documents, and you are ready to take on increasing responsibility for leading parts or all of that process with support from senior staff. You do not default to routine hazard-quotient box-checking-you think strategically about site-specific lines of evidence, weight-of-evidence approaches, and how to build a technically sound and legally defensible risk narrative that holds up to agency and stakeholder scrutiny. You enjoy designing studies that answer the right questions the first time, critiquing toxicity literature with a sharp eye, and communicating complex science clearly to clients, regulators, and attorneys. About the Job

We are currently seeking a mid- or senior-level ecological risk assessor/ecotoxicologist with solid experience across the ecological risk assessment process at contaminated sites, primarily under CERCLA and analogous state programs. The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented, technically strong scientist who can manage project tasks, produce high-quality regulatory deliverables, and serve as a credible technical presence with clients and regulatory agencies, working under the guidance of senior technical staff as needed. 

This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on the candidate’s location and the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Conduct screening-level ecological risk assessments (SLERAs), including problem formulation, exposure and effects characterization, and risk characterization, with increasing autonomy over time 
• Contribute to and help develop BERA work plans and design supporting studies, including field sampling plans (FSPs) and quality assurance project plans (QAPPs) or QAPP elements 
• Support and help conduct BERAs, integrating site-specific data, dose-response relationships, and food web/exposure modeling in place of default assumptions where appropriate 
• Critically evaluate and synthesize toxicity literature to support risk-based decision-making, including selection and derivation of toxicity reference values (TRVs) 
• Prepare and review technical work plans, FSPs, QAPPs, BERA reports, and other regulatory submittals 
• Apply strategic, weight-of-evidence thinking to move beyond routine hazard-quotient approaches, tailoring assessment design and lines of evidence to site-specific complexity and client/regulatory needs 
• Interpret and apply relevant environmental statutes and guidance (CERCLA, state Superfund programs, EPA ERAGS, Eco-SSLs, and similar frameworks) 
• Coordinate and interpret benchtop toxicity testing (e.g., benthic invertebrate, soil invertebrate, and/or plant toxicity studies) and integrate results into risk assessment conclusions 
• Perform quantitative and statistical analyses to support risk characterization and uncertainty analysis 
• Present findings and recommendations to clients, regulators, and other stakeholders 
• Manage project tasks and budgets, ensuring assignments are completed on time, on budget, and to a high-quality standard 
• Support proposal development and contribute to business development and client relationship building 
• Provide technical support to consulting and testifying experts
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff

Qualifications

Candidates should hold an M.S. or Ph.D. in environmental sciences, ecology, toxicology, biology, chemistry, or environmental health, with training and experience in ecological risk assessment.
The ideal candidate will have:

• At least 5+ years of relevant professional experience
• Demonstrated expertise in ecotoxicology 
• Experience evaluating environmental datasets, including chemistry, toxicity, field, and biological data, with attention to data quality, usability, and documentation.
• Experience with sediment, soil, tissue, and/or surface water chemistry data evaluation
• Demonstrated experience with design and implementation of screening level and baseline ecological risk assessments
• Excellent technical writing skills, with a portfolio that includes work plans, FSPs, QAPPs, BERA reports, and/or similar regulatory documents
• Strong quantitative and statistical analysis skills and proficiency with relevant statistical/technical software (e.g., ProUCL, R, or similar)
• Experience effectively managing projects
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• A desire to grow both intellectually and professionally
• Strong organizational abilities
• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers

Preferred Experience:

• Experience with advanced risk assessment approaches (e.g., probabilistic and population-level risk modeling)
• Experience with NRDA
• Familiarity with human health risk assessment (HHRA) processes and coordination with HHRA teams
• Contribution to proposals, business development, or peer-reviewed publications

Compensation is commensurate with experience and internal equity, within the listed range. An employee’s total compensation package includes annual salary; company-subsidized (employee and family) medical, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k) participation with a company match of 1% to 4% of annual compensation; company-paid life and short- and long-term disability insurance; paid sick leave (10 days), paid vacation (12-15 days; determined by title at hire), and paid holidays (9 days) per year; and the potential for an annual discretionary bonus based on company performance. Paid time off will be prorated to reflect part-time scheduled hours, if applicable.
