Tool and Die Maker
Description

 Summary:

Tool and die makers study prints and drawings and use a combination of hand tools and both conventional and CNC machines to construct dies, measuring devices, jigs and fixtures. These devices can be constructed for a variety of uses varying from checking part quality and consistency to holding material while it is welded, lathed, bored or otherwise processed.

Principle Duties and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; make adjustments as necessary
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, power shears, rules, and hand tools
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to properly fit them together
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools
  • Inspect finished dies for defects
  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates
  • Select metals to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments ranging from calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators to optical and CMM equipment
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and follows prescribed safety procedures
  • Adheres to company quality protocols and processes
  • Perform job duties in a safe, ethical, professional manner which is consistent with the H&S handbook
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents including operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and work instructions
  • Ability to interpret drawings and dimensions, and use those skills to construct tools and fixtures that can produce consistent quality parts.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Have an understanding of welding and be able to apply that understanding to the construction of the fixtures

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • At least one year work experience
  • Strong math skills
  • Able to read and understand welding and design drawings
  • Robotic programming experience a plus
