Position Overview
The Chief Health Information Officer serves as OCHIN's executive leader for health information strategy, clinical informatics, and the effective use of data and technology to advance high quality, equitable, and sustainable care. This role ensures that clinical information systems, health data, and informatics capabilities support member needs, improve provider and patient experience, strengthen clinical outcomes, and enable organizational performance across the OCHIN network.
Working across clinical, operational, technology, product, compliance, research, and external stakeholder groups, the Chief Health Information Officer provides clinical leadership for the design, governance, adoption, and optimization of health information capabilities. The Executive translates clinical and member priorities into enterprise strategy, promotes evidence-based decision making, and ensures that technology enabled solutions are safe, usable, compliant, and aligned with OCHIN's mission.
Essential Duties
Health Information and Clinical Informatics Strategy
- Develop and execute OCHIN's enterprise health information and clinical informatics strategy in alignment with organizational priorities and member needs.
- Advise executive leadership on opportunities, risks, investments, and emerging trends related to health information, clinical technology, interoperability, and data enabled care delivery.
- Translate clinical and operational priorities into a clear portfolio of health information initiatives, capabilities, and measurable outcomes.
- Guide future state planning for clinical information systems and informatics enabled care models.
- Sponsor strategic initiatives that improve quality, safety, access, equity, provider experience, patient experience, and operational performance.
Clinical Technology Leadership and Optimization
- Provide executive clinical leadership for the design, implementation, adoption, optimization, and evaluation of electronic health records and related clinical technologies.
- Partner with technology, product, clinical, and operational leaders to ensure solutions reflect clinical workflows, member realities, and evidence-based practices.
- Establish frameworks for evaluating usability, clinical effectiveness, safety, value, and readiness for scale.
- Champion standardized, efficient, and person-centered workflows while recognizing the needs of diverse care settings and communities.
- Promote effective change leadership, communication, education, and adoption practices for clinical technology initiatives.
Health Data, Interoperability, and Governance
- Advance the strategic use of health data to support care delivery, quality improvement, population health, research, member performance, and executive decision making.
- Partner with data, privacy, security, compliance, and technology leaders to strengthen governance for clinical data, information integrity, access, exchange, and responsible use.
- Guide clinical priorities for interoperability, data standards, information exchange, and the integration of external health information into care workflows.
- Ensure health information strategies align with applicable regulatory, ethical, privacy, security, and patient safety expectations.
- Promote trusted, timely, and actionable information that supports clinicians, members, patients, and communities.
Member, Industry, and External Leadership
- Represent OCHIN with members, national associations, advisory groups, industry collaboratives, and health information forums.
- Engage with prospective and existing members to understand clinical, operational, data, and technology needs and translate insights into organizational strategy.
- Participate in member site visits, executive discussions, discovery sessions, and strategic planning to strengthen alignment and identify opportunities for shared value.
- Build relationships with clinical informatics leaders, policymakers, technology partners, researchers, and other stakeholders influencing the future of health information.
- Position OCHIN as a trusted leader in health information, clinical informatics, interoperability, and technology enabled transformation.
Team Leadership and Culture
- Lead, mentor, and develop clinical informatics and health information talent while building leadership capability and succession readiness.
- Foster a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, collaboration, inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement.
- Create strong partnerships across clinical, technical, operational, product, research, and business functions.
- Communicate complex clinical and technical topics with clarity to executives, boards, members, clinicians, and cross functional teams.
- Establish goals, measures, and operating rhythms that drive disciplined execution and measurable impact.
- MD, DO, RN, PharmD, DNP, or other advanced clinical degree required. Active or prior clinical licensure strongly preferred.
- Graduate education in clinical informatics, health informatics, public health, healthcare administration, business, or related field preferred.
- Board certification in clinical informatics or comparable informatics credential preferred where applicable.
- 15 or more years of progressive healthcare leadership experience, including significant responsibility for clinical informatics, health information, digital health, clinical operations, or technology enabled transformation.
- Demonstrated success leading enterprise scale electronic health record, clinical technology, interoperability, data, or informatics initiatives in complex healthcare environments.
- Deep understanding of clinical workflows, patient safety, quality improvement, health data, information governance, and the practical realities of technology adoption.
- Experience influencing organizational strategy and executive decision making while balancing clinical, operational, technical, financial, regulatory, and member priorities.
- Demonstrated success leading cross functional initiatives and building alignment among executives, clinicians, technical leaders, product leaders, operational teams, and external partners.
- Experience engaging with healthcare delivery organizations, technology vendors, industry groups, regulators, researchers, or community partners.
- Exceptional executive communication, relationship building, change leadership, and judgment.
- The ideal candidate is a clinically credible, strategically minded executive with a demonstrated record of advancing health information and clinical technology at scale. They combine a deep understanding of care delivery with the ability to shape enterprise strategy, strengthen governance, build trusted partnerships, and translate complex clinical and technical opportunities into measurable value. They are equally comfortable with engaging clinicians, executives, members, technical teams, and external stakeholders, and they bring the judgment, influence, and execution discipline required to lead meaningful transformation.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Constant interpersonal skills, teamwork, and customer service. Frequent creativity, mentoring, presentations, and teaching. Occasional decision making and independent judgment or action.

- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms.
- This position requires a virtual home-office environment, working remotely.
- The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and mobile devices.
- Travel is required to support OCHIN’s business requirements for go-live installations or training which may require travel by air, vehicle, or train.
Work Location and Travel Requirements
OCHIN is a 100% remote organization with no physical corporate office location. Employees work remotely from home and many of our positions also support our member organizations on-site for new software installations. Nationwide travel is determined based on OCHIN business needs. Please inquire during the interview process about travel requirements for this position.
