Description

Summary:

The Automation Design Engineer is responsible for designing automation and power systems in line with customer specifications and marine industry standards. This role requires efficient and cost-effective designs, collaboration with procurement and production teams, and a strong focus on quality and accuracy.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Design and implement moderately complex systems under guidance (e.g., power management, propulsion, alarm/monitoring, steering systems) following all marine industry standards.
  • Conduct PLC and HMI programming, system integration, and software testing.
  • Collaborate with vendors to ensure equipment design meets specifications.
  • Collaborate closely with procurement and production teams to ensure system quality and accuracy.
  • Develop, review, and modify project drawings and documentation.
  • Provide technical support to service teams and assist in issue resolution.
  • Support project documentation (e.g., drawings, manuals, schematics).
  • Produce detailed drawings to guide material purchasing, hardware production, and software development for each project.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate complex problems.
  • Develop 3D models to ensure hardware accuracy and facilitate procurement processes.
  • Create and distribute comprehensive electrical schematics to the production team.
  • Program software for automation systems tailored to specific project needs.


Requirements

Competencies:

  • Proficiency in computer-aided design software, especially AutoCAD and Inventor.
  • Proficiency with PLC and HMI programming software, especially Siemens TIA Portal and Beijer Electronics IX Developer.
  • Strong understanding of electrical circuitry and electrical calculations.
  • Familiarity with up-to-date electrical parts and materials necessary for system design.
  • Advanced knowledge of marine shipbuilding standards.
  • Competence in project management tools and methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and solve intermediate-level technical challenges.


Educational & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering preferred; certifications preferred (e.g., Siemens, AutoCAD advanced).
  • 3–5 years of experience in system design or related roles.
  • AutoCAD Certification preferred, not required


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move around within the office setting or travel to attend meetings, conferences, or other business-related events.
  • Occasional field support.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access various departments of a given location.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with team members, vendors, and other stakeholders, both in person and through digital communication platforms.
