Position Overview


We are seeking an experienced and technically driven Systems Engineer to join Vertex Industrial Communications (VIC). This role is responsible for providing direct support to the Sales and Business Development team while delivering pre- and post-sales engineering services to customers.

The Systems Engineer will support the design, integration, deployment, commissioning, and ongoing support of industrial communication networks focused on SCADA radio systems, telemetry, Distribution Automation, and Field Area Networks (FAN). The ideal candidate will have considerable experience in IP and RF network engineering, industrial wireless communications, and end-to-end SCADA network deployment.

This is a home-based position with frequent travel. Extended travel to customer project sites may be required based on project needs.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Sales & Trial Support

  • Provide technical support to the Business Development and regional Sales teams. 
  • Deliver product demonstrations, proof of concepts (POCs), and technical sales presentations to customers. 
  • Assist with system integration and engineering activities during the sales process. 
  • Provide technical input for RFIs, bids, tenders, and competitive proposal responses. 
  • Perform competitive product evaluations for specific customer opportunities. 
  • Investigate and resolve performance or design issues during trial and demonstration phases. 

Customer Support

  • Serve as a responsive technical point of contact for customers. 
  • Answer customer questions and help customers maximize the value of VIC-delivered solutions. 
  • Manage open technical support cases through resolution. 
  • Provide installation, commissioning, and technical support both remotely and on-site. 
  • Deliver technical training to customers, partners, and internal sales staff. 
  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction through timely and professional technical support. 

Project Deployment & Commissioning

  • Represent VIC as the primary technical point of contact during assigned customer projects. 
  • Coordinate and perform FAN radio equipment installation and commissioning. 
  • Identify and resolve installation and configuration issues while optimizing network performance. 
  • Conduct field acceptance testing and equipment qualification to ensure systems operate as specified. 
  • Lead the resolution of identified issues or non-compliances. 
  • Escalate technical issues requiring additional support. 
  • Maintain project implementation plans, schedules, and status documentation. 
  • Provide customer training and product familiarization to support ongoing network monitoring, maintenance, and operation. 
  • Develop positive working relationships with customers, principals, and subcontractors. 

Network Planning & Engineering

  • Design communication systems and networks supporting SCADA, telemetry, and Field Area Networks. 
  • Produce network plans and engineering documentation. 
  • Select and integrate OEM and third-party products to deliver complete customer solutions. 
  • Analyze and determine optimal IP, serial, and RF network configurations. 
  • Configure networks for the efficient transport of SCADA and telemetry data over FAN radio networks. 
  • Perform additional engineering tasks as assigned. 
Requirements

Job Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering or equivalent tertiary qualification in RF or telecommunications technology. 
  • SCADA, telemetry, and microwave radio field experience. 
  • In-depth technical knowledge of industrial wireless communications products, SCADA applications, microwave radio, and telemetry communications. 
  • Direct experience supporting customers in Water & Wastewater, Utilities, Oil & Gas, and Transport industries. 
  • Strong knowledge of Ethernet and IP networking with a focus on Field Area Networks (FAN). 
  • Experience producing technical documentation, bids, and tender responses with an understanding of both technical and commercial requirements. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in English, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to represent VIC professionally while traveling nationwide. 
  • Flexibility to work unconventional hours when required. 
  • Proven relationship management and problem-solving skills.

Highly Desirable

  • Knowledge of critical infrastructure communication requirements for Water & Wastewater, Electric Utilities, and Oil & Gas operators. 
  • More than 10 years of experience deploying and supporting SCADA systems. 
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols including: 
  • MODBUS 
  • DNP3 
  • IEC 60870-5-101 
  • IEC 60870-5-104 
  • Knowledge of additional languages.
Salary Description
$120,000 annually + $15,000 bonus potential
