Furnace Tender
Description

Summary Description:

Tend furnace that remelts aluminum used in casting process and control gas or electric pots to melt metal prior to casting.

Hours: 9am -5:30pm must be able to train from 7am -3:30pm for at least 30 days. 

Essential Functions:

  • Tend the molten aluminum furnaces to ensure proper levels, cleanliness and consistency
  • Regulate the temperature of the furnaces and charges a mixture of gates, scrap and ingot in the correct proportions and of the correct alloy
  • Weigh out specified amount of metal and charge metal into furnace by hand or by dedicated equipment
  • Maintain proper operating temperatures per shop cards
  • Follows molding schedule and verifies that shop card product requirements match the molds on the line
  • Degasses Metal as required and test for presence of gas in molten metal
  • Sprinkle fluxing compound on molten metal to bring impurities to surface; skim slag from surface of molten metal
  • Transfer molten metal from furnace to electric post or gas pots
  • Clean and scrape furnace and equipment prior to adding metal for next heat
  • Turn valves to regulate injection of fuel and air into furnace or move controls to regulate flow of electricity to heat furnace to specified temperature
  • Observe color of metal and instruments such as voltmeter, ammeter, wattmeter and pyrometer, and adjust controls to maintain specified temperature
  • Remove test sample of molten metal from furnaces or pots and pour it into disc mold
  • Record data from each melt on form
  • Notifies Melt Deck Leader and/or Foundry Leader of any problems or inconsistencies when pouring a product
  • Perform housekeeping
  • Perform any and all other job related tasks as assigned in accordance with the Company’s safety programs and procedures


Requirements

Skills or Experience Required:

Must have High School diploma or GED; one (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, write simple correspondence, add and subtract two digit numbers, and multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Must have the ability to apply common sense 


Skills and Experience Required cont.:

understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Must have the ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
