Job Summary
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of Atomic Data’s financial reporting. This position leads core aspects of the monthly close process, maintains the general ledger, and oversees complex accounting areas including ASC 606 revenue recognition across managed services, project-based, and usage-based revenue streams. The role is responsible for analyzing financial results, maintaining compliance with GAAP, and supporting internal controls. Working cross-functionally with Finance, Sales, and Operations, the Senior Accountant helps align financial reporting with business activities, supports audit requirements, and drives process improvements to scale accounting operations in a growing technology services environment.
Essential Functions
Financial Reporting & Close Process
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analyses
- Maintain the general ledger in accordance with GAAP
- Support leadership with ad hoc financial reporting and strategic initiatives
Revenue Recognition (ASC 606)
- Apply ASC 606 principles to complex customer contracts, including managed services agreements, project-based work, and usage-based billing
- Identify performance obligations, determine transaction prices, and allocate revenue and cost of goods appropriately across deliverables
- Ensure proper timing of revenue and cost of goods recognition (over time vs. point in time) based on contract terms and service delivery
- Maintain and reconcile deferred revenue and COGS, contract assets, and contract liabilities
- Partner with Sales and Operations to review contracts and ensure revenue and COGS are recognized in compliance with ASC 606
- Support documentation of revenue recognition policies, memos, and audit support related to ASC 606
MSP & Recurring Revenue Operations
- Manage accounting for recurring revenue streams (MRR/ARR), renewals, and contract modifications
- Analyze billing accuracy and alignment between contracts, service delivery, and revenue recognition
- Monitor key metrics such as churn, utilization, and gross margin by service line
Accounts & Internal Controls
- Strengthen and document controls around revenue recognition and billing processes
- Support external audits and ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements
Sales & Use Tax
- Analyze general ledger for transactions requiring use tax and/or MN delivery fee and compile listing to file each month
- Own and maintain item list in Avalara to ensure proper taxation on sales
- Monitor for states reaching economic nexus and register as needed
- Ensure sales & use tax filings are appropriately calculated and remitted each month and troubleshooting discrepancies
Payroll Processing
- Prepare, and troubleshoot as needed, biweekly and ad hoc payroll
- Book payroll data to general ledger and reconcile between HRIS and accounting systems
- Track and accrue metric-based commissions and incentives
Systems & Process Improvement
- Optimize accounting system to support ASC 606 compliance and scalable growth
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, and IT teams to improve data integrity and automation
- Drive continuous improvement in financial processes and reporting
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
- Experience with month-end close and general ledger management
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with accounting systems
Preferred
- CPA or CPA candidate
- Experience in an MSP, SaaS, or technology services company
- Hands-on experience implementing or applying ASC 606 in a complex revenue environment
- Experience with ERP systems, especially QuickBooks Desktop and / or Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains
- Familiarity with subscription-based, recurring revenue, or contract accounting
