The Yard Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and organized daily operation of the yard. This role leads all yard activities, including material handling, inventory accuracy, shipping and receiving, equipment utilization, traffic flow, housekeeping, and employee safety. The Supervisor works alongside yard personnel to ensure products are stored, staged, loaded, and delivered accurately while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
This position is highly visible in the yard and requires a hands-on leader who can effectively manage people, processes, equipment, and inventory while supporting customer service and operational excellence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Yard Operations Leadership
- Direct and oversee all day-to-day yard activities, ensuring efficient movement, storage, staging, and loading of materials.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe yard environment that supports operational efficiency and customer service.
- Ensure inbound and outbound materials are accurately received, stored, transferred, and loaded according to company standards.
- Monitor yard workflow and staffing needs to maximize productivity and minimize delays.
- Coordinate yard activities with dispatch, sales, and operations teams to meet customer delivery and transfer requirements.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities related to yard layout, traffic flow, material handling, and operational processes.
Inventory Control & Product Management
- Maintain inventory accuracy through proper material storage, handling, and verification procedures.
- Oversee cycle counts and inventory audits and assist in resolving inventory discrepancies.
- Ensure products are properly identified, organized, and protected from damage.
- Monitor material quality and communicate concerns or inventory issues to management.
Equipment & Material Handling
- Oversee the safe operation and utilization of forklifts, loaders, and other yard equipment.
- Ensure equipment inspections are completed, and maintenance issues are reported promptly.
- Promote proper loading, unloading, and material handling practices to minimize product damage and improve efficiency.
- Coordinate with maintenance and fleet teams to ensure equipment remains operational and safe.
Safety Leadership
- Champion a strong safety culture by leading daily safety practices and ensuring compliance with company policies, OSHA requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Conduct regular yard inspections to identify and correct unsafe conditions.
- Ensure employees utilize proper PPE and follow established safety procedures.
- Participate in incident investigations and corrective action planning.
- Lead safety meetings and ensure required training is completed on time.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and support yard personnel, drivers, and material handlers to ensure operational goals are achieved.
- Provide coaching, training, and development to enhance employee performance and safety awareness.
- Establish clear performance expectations and hold employees accountable for results.
- Assist with onboarding, cross-training, and workforce development initiatives.
- Foster teamwork, employee engagement, and a positive work environment.
Customer Service & Operational Support
- Ensure customers and drivers receive prompt, professional service while in the yard.
- Resolve operational issues quickly to minimize disruptions to customer deliveries and pickups.
- Support facility operations by maintaining efficient communication across departments.
- Assist with special projects and operational initiatives as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong leadership and team development abilities.
- Working knowledge of yard operations, inventory control, and material handling processes.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to prioritize work and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain a high focus on safety and process discipline.
- Proficiency operating in a construction materials, distribution, manufacturing, or industrial environment preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- 4+ years of supervision experience required
- 3+ years managing or driving operational processes or procedures required
- Construction/yard experience preferred
