Description
The School Nurse promotes health and safety for students in grades 6–12 across our co-located middle and high school programs. This role manages student health plans, administers medication, coordinates emergency response, and ensures strict compliance with Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Oregon Department of Education (ODE) regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Direct Student Care
- Provide first aid, emergency care, and triage for students in grades 6–12.
- Manage and administer prescription and over-the-counter medications safely.
- Create and update Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for chronic conditions.
- Oversee the health isolation room and assess symptomatic students.
Compliance & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate electronic health records using state-compliant SIS software.
- Conduct mandatory state health screenings, including vision and hearing test coordination.
- Audit and enforce Oregon immunization requirements for school attendance.
- Report communicable diseases to local county health departments as required.
Staff & Campus Coordination
- Train school staff on Medication Administration, EpiPen usage, and Glucagon delivery.
- Coordinate care with parents, teachers, and external healthcare providers.
- Act as a key member of the IEP and 504 accommodation teams.
- Advise administration on current public health guidance and protocols.
Qualifications & Requirements Education & Licensure
- Registered Nurse (RN) license currently valid in the State of Oregon.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Oregon Department of Education School Nurse Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (BLS provider level).
Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, ideally in pediatrics, public health, or school nursing.
- Knowledge of Oregon school health laws, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and HIPAA.
- Ability to split time and balance workloads effectively between middle and high school developmental age groups.
- Strong digital literacy for managing electronic medical logs and state reporting systems.
Working Conditions
- Must pass a nationwide criminal background check and fingerprinting.
- Requires moving between the middle school and high school office areas daily.
- Regular standing, walking, and occasional lifting of medical supplies or assisting students.
