Job Summary

The Custodian fulfills the mission of the St Francis Kindergarten & Nursery by maintaining a neat, clean, safe, and organized environment. The Custodian assists the director and staff by ensuring that the Daycare is well maintained for its educational purpose. The Custodian has decision making responsibilities within essential job functions, in keeping with school policies. The position is hired and evaluated by the principal.


Ministerial Character

 The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish of St Francis Kindergarten & Nursery which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ’s mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at St Francis Kindergarten & Nursery help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.


Essential Duties

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Diocese
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Cleans, work rooms, kitchens, hallways, and floors areas daily
  • Cleans and disinfects bathrooms daily and replenishes supplies 
  • Removes trash from building on a daily basis
  • Conducts weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning as required
  • Assists with the set up and clean-up for meetings and special events
  • Periodically disinfects door handles, telephones, switch plates, and trash receptacles 
  • Maintains exterior entrances and walkways 
  • Applies universal precautions in cleaning practices
  • Complies with MSDS regulations
  • Maintains the security of issued keys, secures buildings, turns off lights, sets thermostats 
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Maintains a work schedule that maximizes availability to the school, students, and staff
  • Collaborates with others to enhance the work environment 
  • Conducts emergency clean ups and repairs as needed
  • Conducts periodic maintenance activities and minor repairs
  • Meets with and monitors work of outside contractors
  • Communicates maintenance and repair issues to the principal

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • None required

Certifications and Training:

  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Must maintain compliance with the Diocese of Austin Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) policies throughout the employment period.

Working Conditions

  • Required to work some nights and weekends
  • Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress
  • Required to work a minimum of a full Daycare day
  • Required to work in standard Daycare conditions 
  • All employees of the Parish are engaged in ministry and closely tied to the Pastor in the exercise of his ministry and obligations to the church. 
  • The Parish is an at-will employer.
  • All buildings and vehicles owned by the Parish are tobacco free.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment with priorities and plans that may change rapidly.
  • Will be exposed to religious ceremonies, conduct, and speech, including Roman Catholic Christian prayer and liturgical celebrations. 
  • Will be required to adhere to established dress codes and conduct standards.
  • May be required to use personal or parish vehicle to drive to off-site locations.
