POSITION SUMMARY
The Public Area / Maintenance Attendant is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, safety, and overall condition of the hotel’s public spaces while also assisting the Maintenance Department with routine preventive maintenance and minor repair assignments.
This is a hands-on, active position for someone who takes pride in keeping a property clean, organized, safe, and welcoming. The successful contributor will be dependable, self-motivated, attentive to detail, comfortable working independently, and willing to assist wherever needed.
The position regularly interacts with guests and other hotel contributors. A professional appearance, positive attitude, and commitment to providing friendly and responsive guest service are essential.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
PUBLIC AREA CLEANING AND PROPERTY APPEARANCE
- Clean and maintain the hotel lobby, entrance areas, vestibules, front desk surroundings, breakfast-area common spaces, meeting spaces, hallways, stairwells, elevators, and other public areas.
- Clean, sanitize, stock, and inspect public restrooms throughout the shift.
- Sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, polish, and spot-clean floors, walls, doors, windows, glass, furniture, fixtures, baseboards, and other surfaces.
- Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the hotel and replace liners as needed.
- Maintain exterior trash receptacles, smoking areas, sidewalks, entrances, parking-area surroundings, and other exterior guest areas.
- Clean and organize the pool area, patio, courtyard, grills, firepit surroundings, outdoor furniture, sports courts, and other recreational spaces.
- Keep the guest laundry room clean, organized, stocked, and ready for guest use.
- Clean spills, remove debris, and respond promptly to situations that could create an unsafe or unattractive environment.
- Monitor public areas throughout the shift rather than waiting to be directed to each task.
- Report stains, damage, unusual odors, pest activity, burned-out lights, broken furniture, safety hazards, or other concerns immediately.
- Assist with deep-cleaning projects, including walls, doors, windows, vents, light fixtures, grout, furniture, floors, and exterior areas.
- Maintain housekeeping and maintenance closets in a clean, organized, and properly stocked condition.
MAINTENANCE SUPPORT
- Assist the Maintenance Department with routine preventive maintenance and basic property repairs under the direction of maintenance leadership.
- Complete minor tasks such as replacing light bulbs, tightening hardware, touching up paint, replacing batteries, assembling furniture, changing filters, and completing other basic repairs within the contributor’s training and ability.
- Assist with guestroom and public-area maintenance punch-list items.
- Help inspect guestroom and public-area fixtures, doors, locks, furniture, appliances, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and equipment for visible damage or operational concerns.
- Assist with routine inspections of exterior lighting, pool gates, walkways, dumpster areas, irrigation concerns, mechanical spaces, and other assigned areas.
- Assist with preventive maintenance projects involving HVAC filters, guestroom equipment, laundry equipment, doors, furniture, and property fixtures.
- Help transport tools, supplies, furniture, equipment, trash, and materials throughout the hotel.
- Set up and break down meeting rooms, tables, chairs, equipment, and special-event areas when assigned.
- Assist with receiving, unloading, organizing, and storing hotel supplies.
- Create or report maintenance work orders when an issue cannot be safely corrected immediately.
- Place appropriate warning signs or secure an area when a hazard is identified and notify management promptly.
- Never perform electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pool, life-safety, or other specialized work beyond the contributor’s training, authorization, or legal qualifications.
GUEST SERVICE
- Greet guests in a friendly and professional manner.
- Provide basic directions and property information when requested.
- Respond promptly and courteously when a guest asks for assistance.
- Deliver requested items to guestrooms or public areas when assigned.
- Avoid entering an occupied guestroom without following hotel procedures and receiving proper authorization.
- Respect guest privacy and maintain confidentiality regarding guest names, room numbers, stays, and personal information.
- Immediately report guest complaints or unresolved concerns to the Front Desk or a manager.
- Maintain a professional and helpful demeanor, even during busy or challenging situations.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
- Follow all hotel safety, security, chemical-handling, equipment-use, and emergency procedures.
- Use required personal protective equipment and follow Safety Data Sheet instructions when working with chemicals.
- Properly label, store, and secure chemicals, tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Use wet-floor signs and other warning devices whenever appropriate.
- Report accidents, injuries, property damage, suspicious activity, lost-and-found items, and safety hazards immediately.
- Keep hallways, stairwells, exits, mechanical areas, and emergency-access areas free from obstruction.
- Follow proper lifting techniques and request assistance with heavy or awkward items.
- Maintain awareness of guests, vehicles, vendors, and activity occurring throughout the property.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complete assigned daily and shift checklists accurately.
- Communicate completed work, unresolved concerns, supply needs, and maintenance issues to leadership before leaving the shift.
- Use hotel communication and work-order systems as directed.
- Work cooperatively with Housekeeping, Maintenance, Front Desk, Breakfast, Laundry, Sales, and hotel leadership.
- Assist other departments during high-volume periods, emergencies, special projects, and operational needs.
- Maintain dependable attendance and arrive ready to work at the scheduled time.
- Follow hotel grooming, uniform, conduct, attendance, and workplace policies.
- Perform other reasonable duties and projects assigned by hotel leadership.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Previous hotel, janitorial, housekeeping, facilities, landscaping, construction, or maintenance experience is helpful but not required.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, tools, and equipment is preferred.
- Basic mechanical ability and willingness to learn minor repair and preventive maintenance tasks.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to recognize and report maintenance concerns and safety hazards.
- Ability to prioritize assignments and work without constant supervision.
- Ability to communicate professionally with guests, coworkers, vendors, and management.
- Must be dependable and able to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and varying schedules based on hotel occupancy and operational needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical requirements listed below represent those generally required to perform the essential responsibilities of this position:
- Regularly stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, push, pull, and climb stairs.
- Frequently use hands and arms to clean, carry supplies, operate equipment, and perform basic maintenance tasks.
- Regularly lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Frequently lift, push, pull, or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Move heavier furniture, equipment, or supplies with assistance or appropriate equipment.
- Safely use ladders and step stools as assigned and trained.
- Work around cleaning chemicals, dust, outdoor conditions, mechanical equipment, noise, heat, cold, and moisture.
- Perform repetitive cleaning and physical tasks throughout the shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position works throughout guestrooms, public areas, offices, laundry areas, mechanical spaces, storage rooms, exterior grounds, parking areas, pool areas, and other hotel facilities. The contributor may be exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, wet surfaces, temperature changes, outdoor weather, noise, and moving equipment.
