Position Summary

The Production Floor Cleaner is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe production environment throughout the facility. This position focuses specifically on the manufacturing floor and surrounding production areas, including floors, equipment, workstations, walkways, structural surfaces, storage areas, and other commonly overlooked spaces.

Because the production floor contains a large number of areas requiring routine attention, the facility will be divided into designated cleaning grids. The Production Floor Cleaner will be assigned a specific grid or area each day to ensure the entire production floor is cleaned thoroughly and consistently on a rotating schedule.

Safety is the highest priority. Cleaning around machinery and production equipment must only be performed where it is safe to do so and without interfering with operating equipment or production activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain designated areas of the production floor according to the assigned daily cleaning grid.

• Sweep, mop, scrub, or otherwise clean production flooring as appropriate.

• Operate the facility floor scrubber as assigned and after receiving appropriate training.

• Clean areas around and between production machines, including hard-to-reach areas where dirt, dust, debris, oil, or material may accumulate.

• Wipe down the exterior surfaces of machines and equipment when it can be performed safely and without entering restricted or hazardous areas.

• Clean production workstations, tables, benches, cabinets, and other work surfaces.

• Wipe down safety rails, guard rails, stair railings, safety poles, structural poles, barriers, and similar surfaces.

• Clean racks, crates, carts, bins, and other production or material-handling equipment.

• Clean doors, walls, cabinets, ledges, and other surfaces throughout the production area.

• Remove loose debris, dirt, dust, and other material from assigned production areas.

• Maintain clean and unobstructed walkways, aisles, and areas surrounding machinery.

• Identify and immediately report spills, leaks, unusual buildup, damaged equipment, safety concerns, or other conditions requiring additional attention.

• Follow established procedures regarding spills and hazardous materials and do not attempt to clean materials requiring specialized handling unless properly trained and authorized.

• Use cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and company safety procedures.

• Maintain cleaning supplies and notify the appropriate person when additional materials or equipment are needed.

• Complete assigned cleaning grids thoroughly before moving to additional areas unless otherwise directed.

• Coordinate cleaning activities with production employees and supervisors to avoid disrupting manufacturing operations.

• Follow all plant safety rules, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout restrictions, and posted safety signage.

• Participate in training related to chemical safety, equipment safety, floor scrubber operation, housekeeping standards, and other applicable procedures.

• Perform additional production-floor cleaning duties as assigned.

Daily Grid Cleaning System

The production floor will be divided into multiple cleaning grids or zones. Each day, the Production Floor Cleaner will receive a designated grid to focus on.

The grid system is designed to:

• Provide a manageable daily cleaning area.

• Ensure detailed cleaning rather than attempting to clean the entire facility at once.

• Establish clear daily expectations.

• Ensure all areas of the production floor receive routine attention.

• Allow cleaning needs and problem areas to be documented and tracked.

• Maintain a consistent standard of cleanliness throughout the manufacturing facility.

Some areas may require more frequent cleaning based on production activity, spills, traffic, or safety needs.

Duties Not Assigned to This Position

This position is focused primarily on production-floor housekeeping and detailed cleaning. Routine general janitorial duties outside the production area are not part of the normal responsibilities of this role.

This position will not normally be responsible for:

• Emptying employee trash cans.

• Sweeping breakroom floors.

• Mopping breakroom floors.

• Routine breakroom housekeeping unrelated to production-floor cleaning.

Safety Expectations

The Production Floor Cleaner must use good judgment when working around machinery and production operations.

Employees in this position must:

• Never reach into, climb onto, crawl underneath, or enter restricted areas of operating machinery.

• Never remove machine guards or safety devices.

• Never clean moving machine components.

• Operate the floor scrubber only after receiving appropriate training and authorization.

• Maintain awareness of forklifts, material-handling equipment, moving machinery, and pedestrian traffic.

• Follow all required PPE guidelines.

• Immediately report unsafe conditions, spills, leaks, or damaged safety equipment.

• Stop and ask a supervisor if there is any uncertainty regarding whether an area or piece of equipment can be cleaned safely.

Work Environment

This position works primarily on the manufacturing floor. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, oils, grease, cleaning chemicals, moving equipment, temperature variations, and other conditions typically associated with an industrial manufacturing environment.

Required personal protective equipment must be worn at all times as directed by company policy.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

• Previous industrial, manufacturing, janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping experience preferred but not required.

• Experience operating industrial floor-cleaning equipment preferred but not required.

• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

• Strong attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently and manage assigned cleaning areas.

• Dependable and consistent attendance.

• Willingness to work in an active manufacturing environment.

• Ability to recognize and report potential safety concerns.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.

• Frequently bend, stoop, squat, reach, and kneel.

• Push or pull cleaning carts and equipment.

• Operate an industrial floor scrubber.

• Use hand tools, cleaning equipment, mops, brooms, and similar equipment.

• Regularly lift and carry cleaning supplies or materials weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with assistance when necessary.

• Work around manufacturing equipment, noise, dust, oils, and other conditions commonly found in an industrial environment.

• Safely navigate stairs, aisles, production areas, and areas surrounding machinery.
